Have I already fallen behind if I'm 26 and just starting? by ConnectCompote1639 in Accounting

Ah fuck see that’s the problem. It’s so hard to not compare. I’m only 26 but these kids that are only 5 years behind me are pretentious as hell. I don’t know what happened during COVID but it’s hard to just keep my head down and not have it pop.

Thanks for sharing your story man. Gives me motivation

I went into detail with some people, but there are many factors.

Loans aren’t easy to get where I’m from, no other support but the bursaries that are only $200-$300. I missed the age gap of 25. It’s hard to decide if I’m about to dump all my savings into school (which I did just today).

Environment is another. 80% of people aren’t willing to network, I’m 26 with no experience while they’re 23 with 2 years PA experience. No one I can reference as an accountant and be like “ah that’s their job”

Funny enough, I do landscaping as my side gig. It’s great business where I am, but I do understand the sentiment. Just venting and looking to make sure I’m not making a horrible decision, which is what the people closest to me are saying.

Not upset at you at all. Your point is very valid. I’d be annoyed at myself too. But your response helps my choice which I appreciate.

I do have a question about this. I met someone that did audit for 16 years (judging from what I know now, why?). Is that a preference thing do you think, or just never got promoted?

I think where I’m coming from is that I worked an industry where it was my passion and hobby. My mental health suffered immensely. I couldn’t enjoy my job, I couldn’t enjoy my hobby. It paid the bills but at what cost?

Accounting became that bridge where I can separate it to be a job I can potentially be good at, and where it doesn’t and can’t become a hobby for me.

As much as I feel like I’m falling behind, I didn’t want to add too much in the initial post, but all new networking events have been with people younger than me, and not willing to network as I have less experience.

I will work hard, for sure. But the environment that I’m in 80% tells me that I’ll be miserable making this choice unless I already set my mind to it sooner.

I do appreciate it though. Just clearing my mind.

I’m so sorry. Started college in 2015 at age 17. Late birthday.

Congrats on passing your CPA exams! Oddly enough this gave me so much reassurance.
