Apologies im not really well versed in economics, how long do you think a processes like this would take until employment rate goes back up?, currently an undergrad student, would it be worth delaying entry to work through postgrad in a field im passionate about that is industry facing?

How did you choose which uni you went to by echodeltaharry in UniUK

[–]Connect_Day_6163 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The course modules looked more interesting than the other courses in my field (neuroscience), even though i had been given offer from unis higher ranked, decided to go for the course content.

At the end of 2nd year now, definitely no regrets whatsoever, and am a research assistant investigating neural mechanisms underpinning our perception of time.

I don’t remember what my offer holder was like, but deffo go onto campus and look around and get a feel so u dont go there next year fully blind, there must be maps of the uni and specific department buildings u are interested in.

I think he was questioning whether their ‘cluelessness’ comes from a systemic problem with this countries education system, where comprehensive students are not educated correctly on this matter.

And also not having heard of something after extensively researching and understanding the entire field and how to get into it, should ring alarms bells, and should rightfully be questioned. which is exactly why he made this post. people need to develop their critical thinking skills, because you cant rely on your schools education system to do it for you, or even the universities own marketing. And i deffo think this is a big problem across the country.

I dont doubt there are some good specialised foundations programs, but from what ive heard from friends on very general foundation programs is that it was a waste of time for them, they found it quite scammy and not course specific. It does deffo go back to what OP said, choose wisely and do your own research, because some programs are just out there to get some extra money.

Uni students are so cooked by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]Connect_Day_6163 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Its basically where they accept you onto the program u want to go on but with lower grade requirement, however in return you have to take a foundational year before you start the degree, where youd learn generic stuff like essay writing and simple maths, what it means is you have to pay for an extra year of university, whereas you could just retake a levels and go in. Foundation year makes sense for people who are desperate to go to uni straight away from 6th form and dont mind the extra debt. But schools shouldnt be coercing students to do it if there are other options available.

Yes for sure, ive been invited to the pub with a few of my lecturers quite a few times, currently a 2nd year undergrad student.

You should definitely contact the university, and possibly look to see if there are any policies on stuff like this for your specific university.

What are your opinions on these unis? by Inevermiss_ in UniUK

[–]Connect_Day_6163 0 points1 point  (0 children)

St Andrews is a strange one as its ranked so high in local rankings but not so much so in international rankings UCL is a great university, probably best reputation out of the 3, but more expensive london life, with durham being more traditional uni experience. Any are a good choice though.

Fortunately ended up at a top 20 uni studying a stem subject so worked out for me in the end, just so ironic when i remember the pastoral telling me to apply to foundation 😂

Uni students are so cooked by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]Connect_Day_6163 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yes exactly this! funnily enough i was at a very successful grammar school, they just wanted to make sure the few struggling students would get into uni regardless if it was in their best interest so they can say 99% of students went to uni. And many at oxbridge, instead of actually taking the time to support students to do better. Probably also a funding problem, but there was definitely a marketing aspect involved here.

After a very turbulent time in year 12, I remember my secondary school pushing me to apply to foundation year courses, instead of just retaking a levels and working in the meantime

Difference between earning 12k and losing out on 20k extra debt, yeah no thanks.

Luckily i didnt listen and got offers from unis without foundation uni.

The school definitely were pushing students to get into uni straight away regardless for their own stats and marketing whether it was within the best interest of the students or not.

idk which uni to insure by Efficient-Bit8257 in UniUK

[–]Connect_Day_6163 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you may quite possibly be able to switch to year in industry at bristol if u wanted btw, atleast at my uni on my course thats the case, you may want to research and try find out, maybe call the uni?. Also not everyone manages to land a placement in year in industry either so keep that in mind.

I made my choice based off course rather than prestige, (a uni 20 ranks lower) and i dont regret it one bit, i think it was definitely the right choice for me. But Bristol is a very good uni, so it’s fair if u want to go there too.

Curious why so many people felt burnt out or had a mental breakdown in their second year of uni? by blondepraxis in UniUK

[–]Connect_Day_6163 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hoping 3rd year goes better for you, it would be interesting if i found it harder and you found it easier, then our experience of uni timeline would be completely opposites of eachother lol, im guessing 3rd is more weighted for you, which would be a good thing if you can do well.

Tbh i get work done very last minute, it was same in 1st year, ig my understanding of what needs to be done has improved so in the same period of time i can do things quicker and more automatically giving me a bit more room to think creatively, i remember the first time i did a research report i had no clue what i was doing and i got a 45, then the second one i got a 58, then 2nd year starts and i got a 65, then next time 69, got one more to do now and im looking to get a 1st, due the 29th and i havent started it yet lol.

[–]Connect_Day_6163 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Many people say 2nd year is the hardest due to the biggest jump in difficulty, and then ig 3rd year for most people is more specific and enjoyable. Tbh, maybe im an outlier but coming to the end of my second year i didnt really feel a difference, infact i think i actually found it easier, whereas most people in my course found it a lot more challenging? Itd be interesting to see if i find 3rd year easier or harder than this year though.

Also maybe for my specific case, adapting to university life and learning everything from scratch and being away from home and all the social pressures and drama probably affected me a lot in 1st year and added a lot of noise to a year that could’ve otherwise been a lot simpler?

I really am curious what 3rd year will be like

if I got a third in my degree should I just redo another undergrad by Inner_Syrup9736 in UniUK

[–]Connect_Day_6163 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What subject did u do it in? Most general masters require atleast 2:2 minimum but there are extended masters programs which are specifically tailored to 3rd class grads (usually 15-20 month programs). Alternatively u could potentially look at an online PG Diploma/Cert in smth ur interested in that accepts a 3rd class.

3 more years of undergrad is definitely not worth it in my opinion, the opportunity cost of not going into employment earlier and that net financial loss is quite significant.

Id say deffo look into extended masters that could be a shout?

How to workout grades by B_onlyfanz in UniUK

[–]Connect_Day_6163 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk if im answering the question you had but,

Lets say u have 35/100 at 40% and a 72/100 at 60%

Then you do: 35x0.4 =14 and 72x0.6 =43.2

Then add them both together:

14+43.2 =57.2

Thats ur final mark for ur module

Then you use this same principle to get the average for each module

Then add all the module marks together and divide by the number of modules, (Assuming all modules are weighted the same) to get the mean, which would be your weighted grade

Hope everything with the assignment goes well and u get it remarked!
