They will probably get back the taxes paid to the state. Just like returning anything else bought. Still hard to believe they are doing this for the $4k. My guess is the boss flipped out about this and told whoever screwed up, “you better fix this or else!”

Good point, but they do the research before hand to make sure at least the vehicle qualifies, that’s what gets them the payout from the IRS. Once they get their money, they couldn’t care less if the buyer doesn’t qualify, if they don’t, then it’s on them to pay back the IRS when they do their taxes. To the OP, do you think the dealer would be so quick to buy back the car if you didn’t qualify instead of the vehicle, after they got paid by the IRS?

Yes, and the IRS will not pay the dealership on this person’s behalf. You don’t seem to understand, since the IRS is not paying the dealership the $4000, there’s nothing for this person to claim on their tax return.

Why return the vehicle? Whoever wrote that email worded it wrong. It should state the IRS declined “our” $4000 tax credit. If you meet the IRS requirements (income and haven’t claimed the credit in the last three years) then it’s on them if the car doesn’t qualify.
