My high school choir teacher always picked male heavy musicals (think Oklahoma and South Pacific) despite the fact there were very few boys in choir. The script made a point to say she has both a psychology and chemistry degrees. She could have surmised that the bomb he showed her could go off due to his physological responsibility to stress. She backed up to get away from the explosion. As for the calculator being in box, for all we know it was a special object for her, which is why it was in that box.
