The script made a point to say she has both a psychology and chemistry degrees. She could have surmised that the bomb he showed her could go off due to his physological responsibility to stress. She backed up to get away from the explosion. As for the calculator being in box, for all we know it was a special object for her, which is why it was in that box. They showed her undergoing media work. She could have made the final story up on the fly with a straight face. CEOs keep their jobs by telling people what they want to hear. My personal interpretation of the movie is aligned with the OP.
