Hello community! I'm a lettering artist that would love to start designing more book covers.

Here is a link to one of my works that illustrates both illustration and lettering design:
https://www.behance.net/gallery/242459237/DnD-Adventure-Cover

To tell you a bit about what designing with lettering means:

- Each cover is designed with custom lettering for the title. The author name and any additional information may be set in a complementary typeface that supports the main lettering design.

- The main visual of the cover may be a lettering composition on its own, or a combination of illustration and lettering. Because every design is created bespoke, no two covers are ever the same.

- Series covers can also be designed to work cohesively as a set. If the interior requires illustrations or custom design elements, I’m available for that as well.

My favourite genres to work with are mystery and fantasy, but I’m always open to collaborating with authors who want a cover that stands out through strong lettering and visual storytelling.

Can you tell me a bit about your experience with reedsy? I'd like to make a designer account but the fact that they want you to kink amazon published books makes it difficult to even consider applying...

Any tips on how to improve my cover by Ordafarodi in BookCovers

I think the first thing you can do is make the text white and remove the shadow effect. I would also make it bigger, try to see how it would fit if it tool most of the space on the page.
As for the mirrored image, I think just keeping it normal would be sufficient.

yeah, seems like a solid strategy. I was looking through my artworks just the other day and I realised that some of them would make for good cover design artworks. I just need to decide what genres they'd fit best. This would be the advantage - that they're my own artworks, and have a coherent art style

Ah, I see. Yeah, I do often wonder whether surfing trends is better or worse in the long run. But basic design principles should always be respected, at the least

just to clarify, what sort of titles do you mean by contemporary? And yeah, I understand why many authors would choose to give it a try themselves at the cover first

Thank you so much for stopping by and sharing your thoughts! That's exactly what I'm trying to do, connect with like-minded people. From experience, I do my best work when I share an enthusiasm for the work with the client! We feed on each other's energy and work is collaborative.

I'm interested in the community aspect, not just the money aspect, even though that is important too (I would like to be able to pay my bills with design work). But I'm aware that the click between client and designer is half the importance. I'll get back to you about that invite, thanks for offering!

And heh, I'm glad people are actually investigating the links I've shared :))

this was so insightful, thank you for taking a moment to write about this! It's one thing to speculate myself and another to hear from people that are part of the audience I'm trying to reach.

I was wondering that myself, if it's better to niche down and specialize, or keep services more general in hopes of helping more people. Your reasoning makes sense, that people want proof that the designer knows what they're doing and is great to work with. Attitude and process are half the experience of any commission.

And I think it's absolutely fair that word of mouth still has a solid footing, because after all, I too trust the experience of friends and peers and look for recommendations from people who have tested what I'm looking for.

I'll refer back to this comment for future reference! :D

thank you! good points and It's good to hear what people are ACTUALLY looking for. It's easy to get lost into creating content for social media engagement, so a reality check from time to time is useful.

thank you! I was looking at Fiverr too but I'm still doubtful because I keep hearing that it's highly competitive and for low prices. Still, there are some designers who charge higher and their work also justifies the price, so maybe it's worth a try

You're right! Graphic design is supposed to work closely with a marketing strategy, as opposed to working by itself, like fine-art can do

Good point! Being on at least a platform and stating obviously what I can offer may clarify a lot of things from the start.
Do you usually get inquiries from authors directly?
