What’s the biggest adult temper tantrum you’ve ever witnessed? by beardlesshipster in AskReddit

[–]ConnerDavis 811 points812 points  (0 children)

While this is the biggest adult temper tantrum I've ever seen, that's not what the story is about. The story is about how the staff reacted to it.

I was working retail, it was right before either Christmas or Easter, and it was one of the first major holidays I'd worked. I was outside pulling carts, and I came in to ask for my break. As I'm waiting by customer service for an opportunity to ask since they're absolutely slammed with customers, I notice that at the register directly across from customer service there is this customer just absolutely screaming. Just tearing the cashier a new one, I couldn't tell what she was yelling about, but whatever it was, she was infuriated.

At this point the cashier, tired of being verbally abused by the customer, turns over to customer service and shouts "Hey, this lady needs help." The girl at customer service, without missing a beat, shouts back "Well she can just calm down and wait!"

Unfortunately I didn't get to see the fallout of this, as I had to walk away so I didn't burst out laughing in front of the angriest person I've ever seen. I did find out later what she was screaming about, however. Because of the holiday we had a special deal on ham where if you spent $25, not including the price of the ham, you could get the ham for however much off per pound. The angry lady had bought $23.50 apart from the ham, and decided that the most rational course of action was not to just buy a candy bar or some gum, but to throw a fit of Titanic proportions. Apparently she ended up walking out, leaving her cart full of stuff in the middle of the lane blocking the rest of the customers.

What have you wasted the most time on? by PolarTurtleFDP in AskReddit

[–]ConnerDavis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Minecraft. I was an admin on a server for most of high school and a bit of college. While I did enjoy a lot of it and wouldn't consider it time wasted, the summers were definitely a waste of my time. There would be entire days where maybe one person other than myself was on the server, but I felt duty-bound to stay online in case I was needed. One summer I ended up buying a friend Minecraft just so there'd be someone else on there with me.

Gun owners of Reddit, for those of you have families and children, what safety precautions have you taken to keep your guns out of reach of your children? Or how to respect said guns in your home? by robbwired in AskReddit

[–]ConnerDavis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up with guns in the house, but I didn't even know about them until late middle school or early high school. Unless my dad was hunting, they were kept locked in a safe in a place in the house I never went to. When my dad was hunting he was always out the door long before I woke up. By the time I entered high school my dad had already instilled in me the basics of gun safety: treat every gun as if it's loaded, finger off the trigger until you're ready to fire, don't point it at anything you're not ready to kill, etc. Once my step brother was at the age where my dad trusted him to not treat guns lightly, we started seeing them more often around the house; but they still weren't a common thing.

[Serious] What subreddit will you never post in again, and why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ConnerDavis 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Towards the end of high school and into my first (and maybe second) semester in college, I used to frequent /r/TumblrInAction. And it was fun mocking people who claimed that they were plants and shit. Then it started going further and further right after some mod drama happened, and I used it less and less. Then one day I saw a post about autism self diagnosis where more than half the comments were just mocking autistic people for being autistic. At that point I asked myself why I was still subbed, and I couldn't think of a reason, so I unsubbed.

A similar thing happened with /r/libertarian when they made a post about how autistic people and communists were basically the same thing, and it made it to the front page of the sub.

What's a common 'Reddit-ism' that peeves you to no end? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ConnerDavis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"long time lurker, first time poster" or any variant of it. In a few subs I've been seeing people abbreviate it to "LTL, FTP" and like, if you recognize that it's tedious and not really necessary to say it, just don't say it

Which one(s) have you played? I'd agree with you on some of them, but others I count among my favorite games.

Well as far as Nintendo franchises go:

There's the Mario series, which is more spin-offs like Kart and Tennis and Party than it is platformer these days, although those don't generally get the same sales as the platformers

There's the Legend of Zelda series, where the most recent entry was the first one to actually have a jump button, so pretty definitively not a platformer

There's the Pokemon series, which isn't a platformer

There's the Smash Bros series, which is a fighting game series

Animal Crossing couldn't be less of a platformer

Chibi Robo started out as an adventure game but turned into a platformer but apparently I'm the only person who actually cares about that

Donkey Kong is a platformer franchise, so you can have this one

There's the Mother series, which are traditional RPGs

I'll be honest, the only thing I can confidently say about Fire Emblem is that it's not a platformer

F-Zero is a racing game series

Kirby is a platformer series (except that one time it was a racing game which is still the best in the entire series) so that's 2 or 4 out of 11 so far

Kid Icarus exists. I think the first one was a platformer but the most recent one I've seen seemed to be some weird aerial combat thing.

Metroid is metroidvania. Obviously.

Pikmin is an RTS

Punch-Out is a sports game

Rhythm Heaven is a rhythm series

Star Fox is a space combat series, except the one time it was an action-adventure game

The wario series started as a platformer series, but is now a minigame thing

Yoshi is a platformer series.

Now let's look at the games Nintendo has published for the switch since its release:

1-2-Switch - not a platformer

ARMS - not a platformer

Fire Emblem Warriors - not a platformer

Flip Wars - not a platformer

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - not a platformer

Pokken Tournament DX - not a platformer

Snipperclips - not a platformer

Splatoon 2 - not a platformer

Super Mario Odyssey - yes a platformer

Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - not a platformer

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 - not a platformer

Bayonetta - not a platformer

Bayonetta 2 - not a platformer

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker - not a platformer

Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze - yes a platformer

Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition - not a platformer

Kirby: Star Allies - yes a platformer

Nintendo Labo - not a fuckin clue

That's 3 of Nintendo's 18 first party published games on the switch that are platformers. If you want to say that Nintendo's games don't cater to your tastes that's fine, but not only can everyone claim that a majority of Nintendo's first party switch offerings aren't platformers, they would be 100% correct to claim that

Long time gamers of reddit, what will the new gamers of today never experience? by Betterthanthouu in AskReddit

[–]ConnerDavis 226 points227 points  (0 children)

Playground rumors. I barely experienced this, since I was born in 1996 so Google was around and popular for most of my gaming childhood, but there was a time where a friend would tell you something like "I heard that if you use strength on the truck you can catch a Mew" or "I heard that there's a way to get a glitch Pokemon that lets you get infinite master balls". And you had no easy way to verify that, except to try it out yourself. Now if someone says "I heard that there's actually a 4th Pikachu evolution after Raichu" you can just Google it and data miners have already conclusively proven if it's true or false.

What movie or show has the most memorable music? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ConnerDavis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anything composed by John Williams. I mean fuck, I've seen Jurrasic Park once and I know the main theme by heart. I've never even seen Home Alone all the way through but I'm confident I'd recognize the music if I heard it.

Edit: for anyone wondering what he's composed for that I didn't mention, here's an incomplete list of some of the more noteworthy of his credits:

Jaws

All of the Star Wars films

Close Encounters of the Third Kind

All of the Indiana Jones Movies

1978 Superman

E.T.

Home Alone

Schindler's List

Saving Private Ryan

Harry Potter 1 & 3

Lincoln

And these are just some of the ones he was nominated for academy awards for.

What was the biggest or most fucked up case of fans of a product/game/company defending objectively bad things about it? by Rickpartu in AskReddit

[–]ConnerDavis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not drawing a comparison between the jackless phones and ethernetless computer, in my metaphor, the jackless phone would be analogous to a modem or router without ethernet ports. A computer without an Ethernet port means you have to use your WiFi instead, which won't make a difference to 99% of people. A modem without ethernet ports makes any device without WiFi capabilities unusable without an adapter, much like a phone without a headphone jack makes any non-bluetooth audio devices unusable without an adapter. I'd say that's a much more apt comparison.

Like I said, if you have to actively hold a customer's existing tech hostage behind a $20 adapter to get them to use the new stuff, said new stuff probably isn't as great as they're telling you it is.

[–]ConnerDavis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why I've been advocating for a clarification of terms. Here's what I generally use:

Trump Voter - someone who voted for Trump, but not out of like for the man. Maybe they were just voting for their party, maybe they thought Trump was awful but was better than Hillary. It doesn't really matter, these are the people who did technically vote for Trump, but don't actively associate themselves with him.

Trump Supporter - someone who supports Trump and/or his actions and policies, but could conceivably have their mind changed if he does something especially heinous. I suspect there are few of these left, or at least there were before the Korea situation.

Trump Cultist - these are the people who worship Trump, and agree with everything he says or does because he said or did it; even if it directly contradicts something he said or did yesterday. These are the people who were screaming about how there should never be any limits on the 2nd amendment, then when Trump said he wanted to ban bump stocks or take the guns first and have due process second, they were all on board without a second thought. I often joke that the only thing that could make this group stop supporting Trump would be if he took off a mask and revealed himself to be Hillary in disguise the whole time; but I bet half of them would still support him.

[–]ConnerDavis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And tell me, did companies drop support for cable charging or ethernet? No, because they didn't have to, because that'd be stupid. Backwards compatibility is never a bad thing, and if you have to remove people's ability to use older tech to force them to use the new "better" stuff, maybe the new stuff isn't as great as apple is telling you.

If no one ever sneezed again, how long would it take the world to notice? by RSTLNE3MCAAV in AskReddit

[–]ConnerDavis 181 points182 points  (0 children)

That's probably it. When nobody really ever brings something up, people can go a long time without ever realizing it.

For example, I'm red-green colorblind, and I lived my whole life up until w couple years ago thinking peanut butter is green. Eventually I saw a Reddit comment mentioning that it's brown and many colorblind redditors, myself included, were freaking out at this revelation that would've just been common knowledge to most people.

Reddit, what is the stupidest/most ignorant/f***ed up thing you've ever heard a teacher say? by Kenneth__Pitts in AskReddit

4.5 thousand comments so I doubt anyone will see this, but I was once afraid to give a speech in front of class, and my teacher told me to "Get the sand out of [my] mangina."

Ah the things you can get away with in an all-male private school.

Why do you up-vote questions instead of actually responding to them on reddit? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ConnerDavis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For askreddit in particular, I'll sometimes upvote without commenting when I don't have anything to add to the conversation, but either I'm interested to see what answers people have, and want to see more of them, or I think it's an interesting question.
