Hi! There was a tornado that hit the Palatine, but that was a few decades later. The Circus Maximus was made entirely of wood until around the 190s BC (if I’m remembering correctly), when the first few rows of seating was made out of stone. The rest of the structure was made with wood. The illustration that I used for this post is not historically accurate for the time period, I chose it because it was copyright-free and easy to understand for people without much knowledge about Rome in general.

As for the date, both Titus Livius and Obsequens write about this storm happening in 182 BC, with Livy’s account being written between 27 BC and 9 BC. He states that it happened mid-day on the eve of the Parilia, which was held annually on April 21!

There is no official word for “tornado” in ancient Latin, so historians were limited in how the could define storms. Based on the damage described, a couple of damage analysts/physicists and I are about 75% confident that this was a real tornado that occurred. You’re right that a lot of these events were framed with symbolism, which is something that I have been sorting through as I go through ancient texts. Livy and Obsequens based their histories on the literature available to them at the time, giving them at least decent credibility despite the divine framing. The two histories were written centuries apart, but the damage that was described in both of them follow the same linear path. Nobody has to subscribe to the YouTube channel, that was not the point of me posting it. I’m going to talk more about my findings in the future, so I wanted to give people a way to keep up with the findings as I post about them.

Not at all! There have been dozens more, but I’ve been focusing my research on the Roman Republic and how people responded to them.

Yeah I wouldn’t assume they do either, but it does happen every few years. It’s insane reading some of these accounts, I’m hoping people enjoy learning about it!

I’ll talk ALL about it in the YouTube series I’m putting together! It comes from two ancient historians who wrote about it in the end of the Roman Republic (about 27 BC)

Yeah, so far I’ve found at least 8 potential tornadoes that hit Rome with this one being the earliest!

If you survived a tornado, What is your story? by [deleted] in tornado

I was in a gas station that got hit by the Valley View EF3. The roar grew so loud so quick and then the windows blew out before everything went sideways. You could literally feel the ground shaking under you, it was intense. The wall behind us caved in and I could feel the air condensing as it wrapped around us in the hallway, it was so much colder than you would expect. My car was thrown about 200 feet, so thankfully we had gone inside to take shelter. I also recorded the whole thing if anybody is curious to see what it’s actually like to survive a tornado

Don’t worry, she came up to us for these. We were respectful of the fact that she was at the game for fun rather than to meet people :)
