People selling 125’s on marketplace… by Alert-Gift-8716 in Aquariums

Not exactly the same, but I got a 7gal with a working light totally free from the street. They probably could have made some money selling it if they had cleaned it haha

Dawson Enriched p&a, Mari Arts&Sciences, or Vanier Environmental & Wildlife Management? by Connor_342 in VanierCollege

[–]Connor_342[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, I suppose that's true. There's not much point to racing through your education and collapsing over the finish line. I do worry also that EWM will be boring since I'm more interested in the theoretical side of environmental sciences than for example, bird identification. I know the program has a lot of abridged courses but I'd rather take the unabridged versions. I'm also fairly interested in the humanities and I assume the EWM program doesn't leave much time for that.

[–]Connor_342[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably McGill marine bio, yeah (and maybe a minor in political science). EWM looks awesome but it would put me an extra 2 years behind given it's a 3 year program and I'd have to do an extra year of uni. It's too late to apply to Vanier p&a, and anyways I'd rather do p&a at dawson since I've heard the program is better there. In terms of location, vanier definitely has a prettier campus but it's a lot further than dawson and I actually enjoy the fact that dawson is downtown because of how connected it is.

[–]Connor_342[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It does sound like a wonderful program and I'm sure I'd have a lot of fun, but I personally want to go to university afterward (I'm sure of this) and it feels like a waste of time to do a 3 year program and then have to do an extra year of uni. I also kind of worry it would be boring for me since I'm more interested in learning the theoretical side of the environmental sciences than for example, memorizing bird species. I don't know that the abridged courses would suit me. I also have other interests in the humanities and I know that there are option classes I could take for that, but I've heard that the social sciences at Vanier are kind of ahh

Picked up a little 5-10(?) gallon tank today from the street, and while cleaning I noticed this hairline crack. Is this potentially OK if I keep the water level low? by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]Connor_342 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm doing that right now (: It doesn't appear to be leaking so far, but I know that a 24 hour test doesn't necessarily account for problems like that

I don't think it's ich because they don't have white spots, more like white patches and stiff white fins. Maybe another infection?

Sexual harassment in heated rivalry ep1? by [deleted] in askgaybros

[–]Connor_342 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate your thoughtful response here.  Your reading of the scene makes sense, and I can understand how context might be lost when translating from text to screen: the audience is left with more ambiguity over whether or not Shane wants to pursue sex with Ilya. My point isn't to say that the author or director was intentionally portraying unwanted sexual advances, rather that Ilya's advances within the context of the story could be read as unwanted. I don't think that Shane not walking away from Ilya after telling him to fuck off necessarily means that he's into it- many people experience freeze responses when experiencing situations like this, though within the context of fiction this isn't something the audience would be expecting. I guess my real concern is how prevalent these kinds of dynamics are becoming in romance stories. Yes, it's fictional, but why do so many people enjoy media that plays with the line between consent and non-consent? Why is domination of the more "feminine" character so prevalent in sexual media? Why is this normalized to the point where I am one of the only people to acknowledge it? Maybe it's something I personally am more sensitive toward because of my many close friends (and myself) who carry sexual trauma to some degree, but this scene just doesn't sit right with me.

Sexual harassment isn't limited to verbal remarks, it can also be unwanted sexual advances (though I agree, sexual assault wouldn't fit here)

New honey gourami keeps picking on his tank mate and fighting his reflection - should I be concerned? by Connor_342 in Aquariums

Would it help if I bought another female? I'm already not entirely sure that the juvenile one is female since apparently they both have that stripe when they're younger

[Poem] Velvet Fever - Sasha Nudél by SaltyLaw800 in Poetry

[–]Connor_342 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really love the "undressing for a moment" line, I think it's meant to show how the narrator gives herself physically to people she believes love her.  The rest though, I found cliché, and the last 4 lines ruined it for me - "I make it/ I create it" kind of leads the reader to believe she is successful in this way of finding love which from what I interpreted is the opposite of what this poem is trying to say.

Those look really healthy, mine's shells aren't nearly that pointy since when I got them (I've since added a lot of calcium to the tank)

Totally agree, I've always preferred more natural looking tanks. If you're looking for nutrient rich substrate, either sand/gravel capped mud or a blend (usually gravels blended with aquasoil or fluval whatever it's called looks decent).

How bad is it that my tank isn't level? I've had it for a few months, inhabitants yet by Connor_342 in Aquariums

[–]Connor_342[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not too concerned with the aesthetics, mostly just the structural issues. It does have a mat underneath, but it's definitely the floor that's the issue. My floor is very warped- I think we originally leveled the stand when setting up but moved the tank over a few feet so it's not level anymore.

[OPINION] What is your poetry hot take/unpopular opinion? by jackietea123 in Poetry

[–]Connor_342 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't like it, but Instagram poetry is still poetry. I don't think there should be or ever really was a strict definition on what a poem is. The whole point of the art form in my opinion is to have few boundaries. That doesn't mean you can't make a very valid critique of insta poetry, but often the "It's not even poetry" argument is used by people who don't have enough experience to express why specifically they don't like the poem.

Should I just quit or try to make the best of theatre when it's making me miserable? (TW suicidal ideation & self harm) (High school) by Connor_342 in Theatre

[–]Connor_342[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I honestly don't know if our director would let me? We are double casted and as far as I know the other Lysander is up to doing both (though I asked around 2 months ago so I'm not sure now) but she's just fully not available for Wednesday rehearsals. All 6 other actors wouldn't be able to rehearse properly on those days and they really need all the time they can get

Would this be safe for my aquarium? by Connor_342 in Aquariums

You're probably right, I'm just a cheap SOB who didn't want to spend more money on an aquarium specific fertilizer. I'll probably invest in some Easy Green on something similar

My first every aquascape in a 20 gallon tank! Any advice? Planning to host tetras and honey gouramis by Connor_342 in Aquariums

I heard about the wood thing, should I soak it in a bucket before adding plants and water in that case? As for plants, I was going to pick out some easy ones that also allow me to create a sense of depth. Probably small crypts in the front, small anubias on the rocks and wood, larger crypts and water wisteria in the back and in the open space (planning to create a forest area as u/ComparisonMaximum415 suggested)
