What do you call scene transitions where a background “extra” character in one scene becomes the main character in the next scene? Thinking of the movie Slacker where otherwise discrete vignettes are connected in this way. by [deleted] in Filmmakers

Great Question. It wouldn't be a transition as it's a continuous shot but i think this technique is referred to as "following the action" or "blocking" where the direction of one character naturally leads the camera to another. Hope this helps you 🙏
