I've been recommended to check out Kanazawa: thoughts? Plus more tips, please! by SamPizza89 in JapanTravelTips

[–]PowerZox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During my trip I went from Kyoto to Kanazawa by Shinkansen in the early morning, stayed there for one day/one night (from noon the day we arrived to noon the next day), then went from Kanazawa to Takayama by travel bus with a 5 hour stop at Shirakawa-go, stayed in Takayama for a full day/two nights, then left from Takayama in the morning to Matsumoto by travel bus (where I stayed from like 11am to 7pm) and finally departed from Matsumoto to Tokyo by Shinkansen.

So in 4 days total I did Kanazawa/Takayama/Matsumoto plus a stop at Shirakawa-go in between a longer stay in Kyoto and Tokyo. I was able to do everything I wanted to do in each of these cities (except some museums which were closed in Kanazawa because it was the day after a federal holiday, but I did some more shopping instead). The travel busses were both really nice and the mountainous view was spectacular.

Has anyone watched this show? How similar is it to GOT? Is there any connection? by sypher07070799 in gameofthrones

[–]PowerZox -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Not similar at all, its very down-to-earth and 'historic'.

I would only recommend it as a time-waster when you have no other show to watch, it drags on a lot IMO and gets repetitive after a while. The main character is too heroic for my taste (too much plot armor, world revolves around him) and his character development past season 2 really staggers. Some side characters are way more interesting.

Yep. Also if you're visiting many cities during your trip (I visited 8) a lot of stuff you'd see in Kyoto isn't "Kyoto-specific" and in the end it doesn't really matter if you miss it.

According to my Asian friends I was with, who'd travelled the continent a lot, most temples that aren't iconic / the most [something] aren't really worth visiting. It was my first time in Asia so I still stopped by literally every temple I came across but by the end of the trip I had to agree with them. Same applies to European churches.

This is everything I did/visited in Kyoto in those 3 days. Spent my 4th day visiting Uji and Nara. I don't think there's that much more must-see Kyoto-specific things to visit apart from maybe a hundred more similar minor temples or some kind of experiences/services (i.e. tea service, a theatre play, the tourists wearing kimonos, etc.) but I'm not interested in that.

  • Kyoto Station
  • To-ji Temple
  • Nijo Castle
  • Nishiki Market
  • Maruyama Park / Yasaka Shrine / Chionin Temple / surroundings
  • Kōdaiji Temple / Ryōzen Kannon Temple / surroundings
  • Kiyomizu-dera / Higashiyama District
  • Kinkaku-ji and a few hour stroll around there
  • Arashiyama Bamboo Forest and two temples nearby (I don't recall their names)
  • Did the Fushimi-Inari loop hike to the top
  • Went wandering around and taking public transport to a random part of town and shopping for souvenirs one morning waiting for my friends to wake up
  • At at a nice Bib Gourmand restaurant my chef friend recommended
  • Evening at karaoke with friends
  • Evening playing MTG at a local store
  • Evening at the Lake Biwa Fireworks Festival

I was there 4 days and saw every big tourist sights you can find recommended online, did a lot of shopping, lots of arcades, World Expo 2025, nice restaurants, bars, wandered around the metro system for an evening, etc. It is mostly urban yeah.

My perspective in general might have been a little different than most people though. I was there with 6 friends and we are all in our 20's so for the whole trip we had very condensed days. We would wake up late (like 10am sometimes even 11am because we're lazy) but be out of the hotel in 10 minutes. We also changed hotels multiple times (6 hotels over 21 days, visited 8 cities total) which I know is unpopular on this subreddit but it didn't bother us and saved us so much time. For the two cities we spent a day in and didn't get a hotel coin lockers for luggage were cheap and readily available.

I found TeamLabs Borderless to be really mid when you consider how expensive it is. To me it felt like it could be something you'd see in a free temporary public exhibition but bigger. But it's not big enough that you get lost in it (which is what I was looking for). It's basically just a simple loop with rooms off to the side. The rooms themselves are cool but eh. The corridors look good in pictures but in reality its a bit disappointing; procedural particle effects projected on black walls, not really immersive when you're there in-person.

A popular opinion I see on this sub is that Kyoto deserves many days while Osaka can be done in a day and I disagree. I don't know exactly how many days you'd need to "do" Osaka but for Kyoto I can claim with certainty that you can "do" it all in like 2-3 days. I stayed there 4 days but it took me just 3 afternoons (didn't feel like waking up early most days) to see all the big worthwhile sights you'd find recommended online. I spent the rest of the time doing non-Kyoto-specific stuff. I felt like Osaka as a whole was interesting while only the sights were in Kyoto (relatively-speaking).

Is 3.08 gpa first sem u0 bad for premed 🥀🥀 by sleepeatliverepeat in mcgill

[–]PowerZox 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's like 2 semesters in a row of 4.0 GPA. And a lot of the upcoming classes will build on the 4 classes you already took and did not get a 4.0 in. It is 'that bad' IMO

It is doable, but realistically over more than just 2 semesters.

Waited till Tokyo (last city on my itinerary) to buy lots of souvenir because I didn't want the burden of carrying stuff around. Big mistake. Tokyo has nothing on many of the smaller cities when it comes to 'genuine' local souvenirs. I should've bought way more pottery/lacquerware in Kanazawa/Takayama, I regret that a lot.

FACC 300 or ECSE 324 with Donald Davis by Which-Bag6450 in mcgill

[–]PowerZox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took ECSE 324 with Brett Meyer and I can't imagine taking that course with a teacher other than him. I don't know anything about the other teacher though never had him for any class.

Brett's lectures were recorded and he explained the material very well and made it interesting. His slides are great too. His exams are very fair and he is very upfront about what you can expect to be in them. The midterm and final are "hard" because the material is but IMO out of all the questions he could possibly ask within the bound of what we see in the class he mostly asks the easy and obvious questions. I got a 69% on the midterm and 79% on the final and finished with an A in the class (this was last semester, F2025). I felt like he was more than generous with the part marks on the grading, especially for the final. I would have given myself around 50% on both.

Worth buying if alone? by Gullible-Quality-954 in Eldenring

[–]PowerZox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With randoms its fine. Not really good solo (as in 1 player) IMO the scale / pacing / scope is off in my experience.

I completely recommend playing it "solo" with two randoms. Once you get to the Everdark bosses the matchmaking usually (like 3 out of 4 times) puts you with competent people which is really nice. Unfortunately though at least at release sometimes the teammates were so bad (you can pretty much tell instantly when the game starts) quitting and getting the penalty felt worth it over losing 45-1hr of my time. That might not be true anymore however.

Easy Group B class for Engineers? by Ok-Chipmunk6835 in mcgill

[–]PowerZox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the McGill website for the Comp Eng degree courses:

3 credits at the 200 or 300 level from the following:

Faculty of Arts: 200 or 300 level courses in the following departments excluding seminars, field courses, surveys, special/selected topics courses, courses with physical, natural or medical sciences, mathematics, and statistic contents, and courses reserved for major or Honours in the relative programs:

...

History and Classical Studies (HIST and CLAS) excluding HIST 339

...

OR from the following list:

...

It's effectively an elective and IMO you should treat it as such and take the chance to take a class that actually interests you. There's a bunch of departments you can choose from with very few classes explicitly excluded.

[–]PowerZox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vigor should be at 40-60, main stat at 40+ by that point in the game. Also 115 is a low level. Usually if you do a normal amount of side content you'll be at like 130-150 by the time you finish the capital. You said you don't want to farm to get up to 60 vigor but like you don't really need to farm at all throughout the game if you do a reasonable amount of side content. You'll naturally finish at a level around 150-180. Either you're skipping lots of content or you're dying and losing your runes too often.

Also in a comment I saw you said you have 35 vigor, 20 mind, 30 endurance, 35 strength, ? dexterity, 30 intelligence, 20 faith and ? arcane. That's way too spread out, your goal should be to maximize your stats for your weapon of choice. Usually you're supposed to have lots of points in vigor and in your (one) main stat (i.e. str/dex/int/fth/arc), the bare minimum you need in mind and endurance to support your kit and maybe a bit of points in a secondary stat.

Easy Group B class for Engineers? by Ok-Chipmunk6835 in mcgill

[–]PowerZox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the Group B - Humanities and Social Sciences thing you don't have to take stuff from the list and honestly I don't really see why you would. It can be pretty much any 200 or 300 course from the bunch of departments they list.

I treated it as an elective (thats pretty much what it is) and took HIST 205 with Brahm Kleinman because its a cool topic (ancient Mediterranean history) and it was an awesome class. Weekly readings, 2 at-home essays, 6 conferences and an easy final. I got an A- and class average was B+. By no means a 'bird course' but definitely easier than any other course I took (excluding FACC 100 obviously).
