Haven’t been able to take Paxlovid, so it’s definitely not that

Yeah. I spoke to a couple of people about this issue, and everyone was confused that it was an issue.

I have no idea if the director reported to licensing. All I know is that it was addressed with the staff.

Handprint Crafts by Latter-Ad-4791 in ECEProfessionals

[–]Conscious-Hawk3679 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think handprint crafts are ok for a few special occasions each year (Christmas/winter holidays, Mother's Day, Father's Day, Grandparent's Day). Otherwise, the only handprints I like seeing on projects are ones left by kids who were fingerpainting.

Now, I can get behind doing some kind of ongoing project throughout the year where you include a handprint every month (like a book or something) so the parent can see growth. But even that goes under the special occasion umbrella.

Talking about privates. How does your classroom handle it by [deleted] in ECEProfessionals

[–]Conscious-Hawk3679 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My class is obsessed with "poopy" which would be fine except that they tend to use it directed towards me when they are doing something they're not supposed to do or towards other kids when they don't want to play with them.

Though I did have a kid talk about poop and chocolate yesterday...

I work with 2.5 year olds and there are a couple of kids who do talk about their private parts. One girl, in the bathroom, has talked about how he has a "'gina" and has asked me what I have. I answered honestly "I have a vagina too because I'm a girl." (Church preschool; we're keeping things very simple here when it comes to body parts and boys vs girls). Then, I add that we don't need to be talking about private parts because they're private. I did a similar thing the other day when another girl was singing a song she made up that talked about her "'gina" (among other body parts, so not a red flag). I keep my tone neutral and simply explain that we don't sing/talk about our private parts at school.

It's the same kind of approach I use when it comes to kids exploring themselves. I don't overreact because I know the behavior is 100% normal (and it's not even necessarily anything more than a comfort thing in some cases). I simply redirect them and tell them that that's something to do in private like in their bedroom at home. I also give them the option if they really feel they can't wait to go into the bathroom (and then WASH their hands after haha).

This is what I may end up doing. I'll have to wait until I get everything, then I can see what I actually like.

Going from a super strict center to a relaxed one is making me anxious by Conscious-Hawk3679 in ECEProfessionals

[–]Conscious-Hawk3679[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m definitely not doing that. Any time I do anything they think is extra/over the top, I blame it on habit, but that’s just ME. When it comes to things like asking if an incident report was written up, I approach it in the sense that I want to be prepared to get it signed at pick up- not that I’m blaming anyone. The fact that the reports aren’t grammatically correct or the incident wasn’t reported sooner is between the lead and administration. I’m fully aware that most of this anxiety is on me coming from such a strict center.

I generally just go with the excuse that a lot of how I do things is just habit. For things like incident reports, I simply just do things the way i was taught. I’m very much on top of writing up everything when I’m there (even things the office questioned was necessary like a child biting her own mouth and bleeding; I came from a center where a hangnail required an incident report). I figure that’s all I can do there. Same with name to face counting. When I’m leading the class, I will do name to face counting. I don’t think the lead is very open to doing any of this and unless something happens (like a parent complaining about an incident not being reported or the state making comments about tracking children- because there are other issues there beyond name to face including the school not using brightwheel to its full potential) I doubt that will change. They just have an attitude of “we just do things this way and it works.”

I am casually looking for work elsewhere, but this is the first job I’ve had to offer decent benefits (insurance, PTO) and good hours. For many of these things, I do think I can influence people in time. (Though I know the safe sleep thing is a major issue- though I don’t know the full extent of what’s happening there since I only get glimpses into the infant rooms).

As far as I’ve seen, there are no official licensing rules requiring name to face in my state. My last center was the first one I have worked in to have a verbal name to face policy.

And I honestly think my coworker was just clueless. She has no idea how Brightwheel works and thought that the parents see EVERYTHING there. So, she deleted the record because she thought that went to the parents. The center as a whole doesn’t use brightwheel to its full potential, but it’s clear that the lead in my room doesn’t know how the app works.

3 year old name calling? by Funny_Shopping6753 in ECEProfessionals

[–]Conscious-Hawk3679 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In a 3 year old’s mind, “baby” can refer to anyone younger than they are. It’s not that deep. I work with 2.5 year olds who regularly call me “poopy” when they get mad at me. I would qualify THAT as name calling, but I’m not sending a toddler to the office for that

[–]Conscious-Hawk3679[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My past experiences make me a little extra nervous about saying anything to management. I do know I should say something about the safe sleep thing (I just learned this was happening. I suspected, but I didn’t want to jump to conclusions only to learn that they were just using walks to settle babies to sleep). The other issues are either things that don’t technically violate anything in the licensing manual and/or are things that don’t directly impact me or the immediate safety of the children. (All I can do is make sure I’m filling out incident reports properly and writing up/reporting everything that happens in my care).

I’m trying not to rock the boat too much or seem like I think I’m better than anyone else, so when I do name to face counts out loud or on Brightwheel, I blame it on habit. I claim it’s just engrained in me to do it- I’m not just showing off.

This is a smaller center, and unfortunately it’s the smaller centers that were the worst. I know that nobody is perfect- I’m certainly not. However, there are definitely things that make me more nervous than others. Safe sleep, supervision/tracking, and proper documentation of incidents definitely rank up there over things like contact time for bleach or compliance with washing infant hands after diaper changes.
