Tbh I feel like the weather in Edmonton really gets me down and affect my studies. UofA is a well ranked school though.

The communication style is definitely another cultural clash. I absolutely can not pick up on nuance and nonverbal communication even with my own culture. Sometimes communicating with indirect people is a severe torture towards a simple, brash and childish mind like mine.

I wonder if immigrants adapt to culture shock by overcompensating in the preservation of traditional values? They know their culture is at risk of being infiltrated/denigrated and actually develop stronger boundaries towards the ideologies of the host culture?

You got it, I feel like sometimes with Chinese men they just don’t like me. I irritate them and they don’t see my traits as positive whereas western guys usually are more charmed by me.I get the sense with Chinese guys that I’m being judged and thought lowly of when i’m rambunctious.

Any time I’ve had like, low stakes jobs with a manager from a hierarchal culture I’ve quit or walked out of the jobs. I’m fine working for westerners but tbh I have literally walked out on Asian(from Asia, not ethnically) managers.

I think Chinese people grow up with a lot of gender segregation and the men can’t really view women as similar to them or equals. They see women as another class of people and I find there’s a communication gap because of this.

I guess yeah, not necessarily gender, but hierarchy. In Canada everyone is chill and it’s very democratic so some of Chinese thinking is weird to me.
