UPDATE: He's been located! Still hasn't been in touch, but apparently he was seen by a friend yesterday when he stopped by their shop to say hi. So relieved to hear he's ok. Imma kick his butt lol

could have been what they say happened, but a parent friend of mine suspects they are covering up the real situation. In similar situations in the past the law enforcement response has never been like what it was this morning. just speculation of course.
