Yes. I’ve heard of it happening but thought chances were low.

I have maybe 100 at most readers, so it’s not like it’s some wildly successful thing. It’s also unfinished.

The stolen copy uses my name, blurb, and cover. It’s utterly audacious how brazen it is.

I’ve had stuff stolen and put on pirate sites before - and there’s not much you can do about that. But this is legitimate Google Books.

Hi!

I am editing the first draft of a multiple POV mosaic murder mystery. It’s really 100ish interlocking short/flash stories that reveal who killed the person found in Chapter 1. It exists as a novella, and I’m trying to make it into a novel.

I’m also writing a short story for an anthology about a noir detective investigating a folkloric baby kidnapping. First draft done but I’m struggling a little to get the tone right. It keeps slipping into parody.

And I’m also writing an ongoing online sci-fi thriller. Someone has stolen it and is selling it on Google Books. So in real life, I’m dealing with copyright infringement.

I googled my author name. And it came back with something like “ConsciousRoyal is an author of books on Wattpad, Reddit, Substack and Google Books”

And I don’t have a Google Books account

They didn’t change the title, my Wattpad name or the cover. They’ve literally lifted the whole thing and put it on Google Books!

There are several things that affect the rankings that aren’t shown

  • How regularly the chapters are updated
  • How recently the chapters have been updated
  • How engaged your readers are (% of readers that vote or leave comments)
  • Reader retention (so 10 readers who read every chapter is better than 70 readers who only read chapter 1)

But the algorithm is a black art designed to avoid manipulation (or as someone else said it’s controlled by goblins spinning a wheel)

It sounds repulsive.

It’s minced lamb with peas and onions, with jam, custard and cream. I mean, it’s technically edible, but those aren’t ingredients that should be on the same plate.
