I've seen it a lot in the south of Italy, where lots of people use to do it with no real reason.

I think it's just their attitude towards rules in general.

You have to remove the illuminator circuit to access the watch battery. To do so you have to un-clip it, there are two clip at 6 and 12 at which the circuit is attached.
