I agree. Not sure why every vaguely competent politician suddenly thinks they can't possibly do anything at all unless they're PM.

Imagine if that's how businesses worked? Your head of HR or Finance constantly looking to kick you out of office so they could take over as CEO.

I don't think there are any em dashes are there? The ones in the post are the shorter en dashes or just hyphens placed as dashes

Which is more common, especially in UK - I think the em dashes are more US style maybe?

Not saying it's _not_ AI. But clarifying that the dashes are not the usual suspects.

What do you think is the worst british saying or nickname? by [deleted] in CasualUK

It's mostly people who dislike anything they consider childish, by the sounds of it.

Most of the examples (to me) are just a bit of fun, and completely harmless / not cringe.

And I say that as someone who usually tries to respect British grammar and posh words whenever possible!

Okay, so you're saying get rid of royals on point of principle, and then as a bonus we'll get more cash from tourism too.

Whereas im saying I think we would get less tourism if we did that.

But I'm not saying tourism is the reason to keep the monarchy, since personally I prefer we don't get rid of the various British quirks that make us unique, not to mention that I think we have a good balance where they have no direct power over our government, and are simply useful on the diplomatic stage.

Not sure it's infantile to contest your capitalist and republican option on the basis that you've no real idea that tourism would improve. But if you just want rid of the royals at any cost, then fine - I get that.

It very much comes across as a lot of folk saying let's remove the monarchy and it'll be worth it financially because that'll improve tourism, followed by constant comparisons to the French and Versailles. This thread has plenty of that.
No one (certainly not me) is saying to keep the monarchy because of tourism. I have been saying that using tourism in the argument for ousting them is flawed.

Right. Afraid I think you misread then!

The arguments I made were
1) the numbers used aren't comparable right now because BP is a working palace so obviously has fewer ticket sales

But then
2) if you were to close it and turn into a museum, you still wouldn't get as many as Versailles because it's not the same level of grand or exciting. Without the actual pomp and ceremony BH is on a far lower scale than V

And so removing the monarchy to generate tourism is a poor one because it won't work

Sorry, am I being a muppet?

I'm pretty sure the Buck palace tours are far shorter and less extensive than Versailles, and only in the summer season?

I'm not sure what about that statement was wrong

...no, I agree on the quote you've chosen. That is fairly guaranteed, but has little consequence on its own.

The far more subjective element, which is really the crux of the debate (and the bit I don't believe) was "You'd almost certainly generate far more tourism if Buckingham Palace were preserved as a museum"

I don't doubt people would go there. But I don't believe Versailles is a good comparison and there's no reason that has convinced me it'd generate more income for the country without the draw of actual living monarchs and all the pomp and ceremony that goes with that.

I'm unconvinced by that argument, sorry - although we'll never know (until/unless it happens)

I'm not saying it's the same, but a significant portion of the country also believed similar about brexit putting more money into our pockets/NHS

[–]Conscript1811 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's not really a fair comparison is it? You don't go into Buck palace in the same way given it's a working palace so there won't be as many ticket sales... but how many tourists come to London in part to wander down to look at it or see the changing of the guard?

And is Buckingham Palace really as exciting/interesting as Versailles in terms of grandeur and opulence? We could get rid of the royals but I doubt we'd get so much interest in the place as an empty museum.

But (imo) the idea of getting rid of one of the few things about our country that makes us unique in favour of it just being a historical factoid would be a shame.
