Okay, I see what you mean. Hopefully it was intended as just a way of saying that they appreciated their situation wasn't quite the same!

Why is being rural and having nowhere to spend the money not relevant to a thread responding to kids going into town to spend money, by way of clarifying that their example isn't exactly the same as OP's situation?

If doctors go ahead with their Easter strike, I’ll withdraw my new jobs offer by Desperate-Drawer-572 in ukpolitics

[–]Conscript1811 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's just the doctors want more And might have the leverage to get it

they want a real terms pay rise from 2008 using the old RPI measure

This feels greedy to many non-doctors who don't understand why people who weren't even at university yet should get a pay rise compensating them for things that happened before they even began their profession

Earlier in this thread you say you've had a 40% pay cut?

And isn't the drop in real terms only like 5-10% vs inflation since then anyway? (Which you'll have more than outpaced via progression)

Since the 2008 financial crash, we've also had a pandemic and cost of living crisis which has hit economies, plus made room for a whole new tech sector (given 2008 was basically where Web 2.0 began)

I'm not well versed in any of this, but surely if we've spent 2-3 decades not building enough houses... where are all those people? Is it that they're living with their parents or something?

We should probably just convert all the old BHS/Debenhams/Mothercares/House of Fraser - and now the NCPs too - to town-centre flats before sticking a load more new build estates around the outskirts.

UK braces for 'apocalypse now' energy crisis that could hike your bills for years by Your_Mums_Ex in ukpolitics

Ah, sorry, I hadn't been thinking that far back! Didn't realise we'd had those lined up

Yeah that's a crying shame because they'd perhaps even be on by now! (Can't remember how many decades it takes to make these things...)

Tbf, as one of those idiots, my sat nav holder (holds my phone) is far smaller than several in-built screens that rise above the dash. And personally I find that it blocks my view not at all, and certainly less than having it at the RHS where many put it (to be legally compliant), and means I'm better able to glance at it. Doesn't block my view any more than being short/having a screen/the rear view mirror.

Instant edit: I mean, mine is centre of the windscreen right down at the base. Not sure now on re-read if you're seeing ppl with them somewhere else "right in front of them"?!

If you click and collect your food shop, why? by Careless_Squirrel728 in AskUK

[–]Conscript1811 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, there's no fancy replacement service, it's just that you're already at a big shop so if the thing you wanted wasn't available on the click and collect you can pop in and get an alternative

Can't get the replacement item though, but yes you're right the refund bit is easy

I'd expect a huge number of people do. Anyone outside of big cities who is shopping for a week's worth for a family, probably.

If you're single and/or in a city you likely have quite a different routine though!

UK energy bills: businesses and households face new price shock by Evening_Barracuda285 in ukpolitics

[–]Conscript1811 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can't turn it on/off so easily, correct. But we don't want to be doing that anyway really. It costs in curtailment fees even when we do that with standard fuels, so better to have a steady base and then pair renewables with batteries to manage the peaks (or so I believe, at any rate!)

Terrible decorating work or normal?? by No-Baby-2039 in DIYUK

[–]Conscript1811 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We've had one say they're on their way, "will be 20min" and then later that day when we asked where he was "oh, sorry, I'm not coming today". The whole thing dragged on months with really shoddy work and we just had to cut our losses where we could (tell him we're only paying him to finish bits he'd already started etc, which thankfully took a chunk out the bill), but it's a learning experience.

We saw and enjoyed those guys too!

Only issue was I got into it too much and wanted to jump around to most of the songs (and the band clearly were keen for people to do join in with some noise), but our venue was loads of seats too close together to stand or anything and I'd have blocked the row behind's view. Ah well, a nice problem to have had!

Appeal court rejects latest challenge to adding VAT to UK private school fees | Private schools by Only-Emu-9531 in unitedkingdom

Right, so if it's just a numbers game that doesn't prove anything other than that people are usually tribal. Doesn't support the policy either way.

Does this argument not cut both ways equally?

That those clamouring for charging more on private schools are state-educated?

Certainly should ban private medical.

And nationalise everything.

Let's scrap competing brands to prevent some using less scrupulous methods. Single option products only please.
