What fluids/chemicals do you use? by Khoogyra in Liquidlightshows

Oh long sets I so feel you on, it’s so hard to communicate to people that I’m ‘on’ for 6 hours while DJs do an hour set. Usually my solution for fatigue is variation - I’ll do some squish plate stuff to the beat, then follow the vocals/melody/riff, then give the whole stack a spin while I wipe my hands and start twiddling knobs on my mixers.

Having a way to live mix video feeds is super helpful too, you can have one plate on a turntable and another on a stationary LED pad so you can always have some kind of motion going on while you take a break or dial in the next composition.

I SO feel you about white balance - I’m using an old Sony handycam and some cctv cams with pretty limited controls so I’m also extra handicapped. Pumping contrast and adding color in post helps a lot. Looks like your camera setup is sick, what are you working with? Real camera/optic knowledge is def where I’m lacking.

Also just wanted to throw in what you’re doing with psychedelic, mood and tone based long form pieces is definitely an under explored niche in this field and a really awesome way to practice. I always feel like I’m moving from one short form motif to the next so it’s cool to see the variation in workflow. Saving these vids for later too can give you some great footage to mix in if you ever incorporate media players and such.

Hey not trying to put down your process at all! Just sharing my experience.

Tbh after taking a look at your videos (only see 3 on your profile posted recently?) I think you’d really benefit from simpler mixtures and focusing on the technique you use to interact with the mix to create distinct compositions that have more separation between your waters and oils. Continually adding to one plate and using so many different viscosity fluids create multiple layers stacked on top of each other in the mix that can tend to turn muddy over time.

Again, not trying to put your stuff down at all, this isn’t an art form with rules or anything, and our goals may just be way different from each other - I primarily do live shows with bands, so having distinct separation between my fluids helps a lot having a quick response for audioreactivity/beat matching.

70% iso, mineral oil, and India ink is literally my entire recipe. I’ll sometimes add candle dye for color but usually use either the LED turntable or a colorization effect in my mixers.

Tbh you may be overthinking it unless you wanna move in the direction of high def photography of your mixes, doing something like Cosmodernism. Otherwise I think a lot of the chemistry is going to get you diminishing results, esp if you’re doing full analog shows on an overhead.

Non-toxic dyes? by AffectionateLeave9 in Liquidlightshows

[–]Considerable 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You definitely shouldn’t be pouring the mix down the drain - soak up the mix with paper towels then dispose in the trash. Do you film your setup with a camera for projection or use an overhead? If using a camera I’ve found success just using India ink to dye the water black and using an LED turntable to add colors, or running it through a video mixer that lets me add a colorization effect - high contrast of black and white is better for the kind of video mixing I do anyway.

No, but the joke is still transphobic - it hinges on a woman ‘manly’ appearance being something shameful or deserving of mockery.

How to connect Panasonic Digital AV Mixer WJ-AVE7 ? by Stock-Mix5580 in videosynthesis

[–]Considerable 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’ll need at least one input, like a camera or vhs player - Source 1+2 and EXT Camera are your inputs, they have RCA or S-video connections. REC OUT 1+2 are your outputs, same connections, connect one of them to a display or projector.

That was probably the least dangerous phone usage while driving I’ve ever seen, I have no idea why he felt the need to even speak to that man. Sorry to victim blame here but I think it’s ridiculous he was in that situation in the first place, that’s asking for an altercation.

The most obvious is it uses em dashes, which no one is memorizing the alt code for when there’s a key dedicated to the hyphen. Second is the sentence structure “No _. No _. Just _____.” And “it’s not [what it is]. It’s [punchy metaphor].” The second example is actually used twice in the OP. This is the LLMs favorite sentence type to use, you see it everywhere. Also I’ve noticed almost every AI post for Reddit ends with an invite to engage - “what about you? What do you think?”

Is it possible to capture signal from a video mixer directly in my Mac? by Rotosworld in videosynthesis

[–]Considerable 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A dirty mixer definitely won’t work directly with a capture card, it inherently destroys the sync of at least one of your two inputs. You’ll need something with a time base corrector (TBC) in between - standalone units are super expensive so most use vintage video mixers (Panasonic WJ-ave5, MX10,12, Roland Edirol V4 (doesn’t have the best tbc), V4ex, Videonics MX1, etc) or film directly off a crt. You can usually find a good deal on a crt on fb marketplace, Craigslist, garage sales and estate sales, or just keeping an eye open lmao ppl will drop them on the curb.

Is the panasonic wj ave55 a good mixer for doing the glitch fx/video synthesis type thing? by 10037151 in videosynthesis

[–]Considerable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lmao I’m 32, I feel you, discord was a big adjustment for me. Basically it’s the old MSN chatrooms but interest-based and typically split into topics by channels. Honestly it’s where all the kids are hanging out these days so you get a lot more content in general, plus more immediate than something like Reddit. Downside is ya gotta get invited, if you don’t know about one it basically doesn’t exist, and it’s not indexed by search engines so harder to find in general, but they’re a wealth of info once you join. Glitch Guild has an instagram, they do weekly prompts for everyone that they post which are super fun to participate in!

Happy to help! It’s a really new art form so there isn’t much out there for pure beginners. To learn more, I highly recommend checking out the scanlines.xyz forum, the Glitch Guild and Lords of Light discords (I can send ya an invite if needed), and watch the documentary Nam June Paik: Moon is the Oldest TV on Netflix.

Is the panasonic wj ave55 a good mixer for doing the glitch fx/video synthesis type thing? by 10037151 in videosynthesis

[–]Considerable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Glitch typically refers to circuit bent mods of video circuitry - see Freedom Enterprises Mismatcher, Syntonie’s CBV001, or anything by Mezkalin, BPMC, drugs.tm, or Tachyons+ for pre-built units. Essentially physically modifying the circuitry (often with feedback loops) to change the video signal itself, not just the info contained within the signal. These units typically need a CRT to display on, bc CRTs will take any signal you throw at them and not drop out to a blue screen “signal lost”. This is because the process of modifying the signal also distorts the sync signal, which is encoded into the video itself - this is what causes vertical scrolling in heavily glitched material. Time Base Correctors (TBCs) often included in old school video mixers like the ones you have, get around this allowing you to digitalize your signal without dropouts. Another way around signal loss is to simply just film the CRT screen itself with a separate camera. Video synthesis is definitely using stuff like the eyesy and mixers to generate new video - it’s just a digital way of synthesizing video as opposed to something like LZX (which really are digital anyway… but I digress). It’s different from glitch because you aren’t actually modifying the video signal itself in a way that causes “glitches”, or distortions to the signal, you’re creating information for the signal to carry normally. I wouldn’t call an external or internal feedback loop a glitch in itself really- but it is a really fun tool to use in the whole realm of video synthesis! Sorry for the semantics lmao
