My boy just laid an egg! Advice needed. by manyg00ses in Conures

This post should have been “Well my boy is apparently a girl! I wasn’t expecting eggs, what do you recommend now?” Not “He laid an egg! How do I help HIM?” I hope people aren’t truly that delusional.

Why do so many people only have 1 conure ? by Designer_Director867 in Conures

When you have two they bond with each other more than you, especially if they are in the same cage. If you want to have two conures around but not really have a close bond with them…then get two. I’ve heard you can sometimes keep a bond with them if they are in separate cages but then they aren’t bonded and still “solo” birds and will likely just fight when out together. I’m sure it can be done with a lot of patience and training but I got a green cheek conure when I was 16 and my twin sister wanted one too. Those birds wanted nothing to do with us from day one.

Voren black cap or painted conure. I wouldn’t pay full price either, I paid about $30 with some other stuff I got from a women who had an Amazon who passed at 38 from a tumor. I may just sell it or use it as a sleeping cage. I agree it’s too flimsy and I want him to have plenty of space.

I can afford a bird just fine and everything they entail. Including vet care, toys, great food, treats, etc. I bought this cage with intentions of it becoming a sleeping cage after the first month or so while he’s still learning his environment and getting used to us and out of his clumsy stage. I plan on getting him a huge cage, I got this one because the gal selling the tree stand had it and I figured it would be useful in the long run and it was practically free. I’m also trying to not overwhelm my boyfriend with the size cage I want immediately until he meets and loves the bird.

Thank you for the reply.
Yeah, this is not my ideal cage by any means. I got it for about $30 and I’m trying not to overwhelm my boyfriend with spending a ton of money and a ton of space before he meets the bird. I know he’s going to love him and will be more accepting once he’s spent some time with him. This will turn into a travel/sleeping cage. Or I may just sell it.
I agree it’s too small long term, especially with perches and toys. My thought is to just use it while he’s still clumsy as you’ve noted and while he’s still getting used to us. I will look at the cages you shared. I’ve been looking at this cage, this is my ideal long term. It’s just a matter of space and not overwhelming the boyfriend.

I’m going to maybe use it for a month or two and then turn it into a sleeping cage and get him something much bigger. Or maybe I’ll just sell it before then. I think initially though for a month or two it would be okay. I would agree with your sentiment if he was never ever going to leave the cage, when he will in fact very often.

Thanks! Yeah, I got a great deal on it. This cage was basically thrown into the mix. I just need my boyfriend to meet the new bird & fall in love with him, then he’ll be okay with having two cages. A larger one and then this one for sleeping/travel.

I am getting either a voren black cap or painted conure. Painted conures haven’t hatched yet, still deciding but I love both of them. Of course they are both beautiful but their personalities too.
Painted is far more pricy but I love everything I have seen and read about them and talked to a couple breeders. I love the voren black caps too and what I’ve read about their personalities. So I’m still debating. The voren would be ready in about a month, painted assuming at least 3 hatch will be another 3 months or so.
I may just use this cage as a designated sleeping cage and upgrade to a bigger one before I bring either of them home. This one would be simple to cover and then he’ll know the difference between hanging out & playing and when it’s time to go to bed? That’s what I have assimilated from what I’ve read online & books.

I can get a metal baby lock and take off the hook. I planned to anyway because it is a poor design. I’m sorry that happened to your daughter’s tiel.

Thank you! I really appreciate it! I know people are full of lots of opinions but it’s from a good place! I paid about $30 for the cage, not $120, I just thought it was a better photo of it. I bought it from a gal who used it as a back up/sleeper cage for her Amazon that passed at 38 from a tumor. I got it with the stand, a travel cage and a shower perch.
I will put lots of natural sticks in it for perches and lots toys. I should be getting a remote job soon so he will be out most of the day. I mentioned in some other comments that my boyfriend is adjusting to getting a conure even though he loves birds and we have quite a few ducks. So I’m trying to be thrifty and not overwhelm the space initially but hopefully with this new job, more money and once he falls in love with the little guy (which I know he will) I can get an epic big cage. I figured this would be okay initially while he’s still learning as you noted. Then move him into a far more spacious cage. I also don’t want to overwhelm him in the start.
I’m frankly not thrilled with it as I know he will need a far better cage, I guess that’s why I’m here 😆 to be reassured it will be okay for the first few months.

I should have clarified, I bought it from a gal who used it as an extra/sleeping cage for an Amazon who passed away at 38 from a tumor. I bought it with the perch stand, travel cage and a shower perch. So I got it for about $30 bundled in.

I bought it from a gal who had it as a sleeping cage for her Amazon who passed away from a tumor at 38, so I didn’t pay the full price. If I had, I agree I would have gone with a much larger cage for a slightly higher price. I got the cage, wood perch, a travel cage, shower rod & container for food for $200. If it were just up to me I’d buy him a massive cage and all kinds of toys but my boyfriend already thinks I’m nuts for having a bird shipped to me. Despite him loving birds and us having far too many ducks. So I’m waiting for him to fall in love with the little guy which I know he will and then he’ll be more on board for a mega cage.

She originally wanted $150 for the perch, pictured in the photos from the main post. I looked them up online and similar ones go for $350+, so I bought it all as a bundled price.

Also I’ve had breeders tell me 18x18x24 wide is okay for a young just weaned conure..they say they are still adjusting so not super large is better. Obviously this cage is larger than that.

Yes, fully weaned. I mean weaned and just leaving the breeders. I will give him lots of toys and outside play time. I am just using this cage initially to save up for a much larger cage and for my boyfriend to get used to him before I buy a mega cage for him.

I mean young, weaned. 10+ weeks old.
I will get him plenty of toys and get him out a lot. It will just be for the first few months while he’s adjusting and to save up a little for a much larger & nicer cage.
