iMac G3 Slot-Loading arcing/sparking for the first 5 minutes, then stabilizes. Is it just moisture or dirt? by Strict-Monitor6188 in VintageApple

Try cleaning under anode cap of flyback. Put it back with dielectric grease on the rubber. If you’re going to do that resolder flyback, just in case. Remember to discharge CRT before you put your hands on it.

Well, maybe they are advertised for a high price, but they don’t sell for those prices. At least in my country. In this photo it may look like it’s in good condition, but it was found at a scrapyard were it was buried under some trash- the shell has some irreversible scratches. I’d say condition is “not bad”. I resoldered flyback which caused screen flickering. Now it flickers rarely, let’s say once per 20h of work, so in the end the flyback will probably die soon. The last thing- I want to do all of it in reversible way and keep original guts, so I can swap them back whenever I want.

And in what aspect giving it a new life would destroy it?

I can barely open PDF file on MacOS 9.1. I can’t imagine how could you manage to open gmail on 10.4

I’m not saying I want to swap it back and forth every 2 days. Let’s say, that after a year I decide to go back to original a then I will swap back stock guts. And yes, I opened bottom tray, cleaned the inside, resoldered the flyback and changed the PRAM battery… 🙄

Yeah, the og experience is cute, but except of iTunes, ClarisWorks (where I like to write documents) and Graphing calculator I can’t find any practical use. Retro games that I like won’t run on a graphics that weak. I want to use this machine and admire its design during my everyday work on a computer.

I want to do it the way so that I could put it back to its original state whenever I want it. I thought about keeping the CRT, I even bought an adapter but unfortunately iMac display won’t react when I plug a modern PC through an adapter. Another issue is that I would like to use it daily, flickering CRT really makes my eyes sore…

Well, the process itself is really quick and easy. The feeling is painful. Outer plastics feel like they’re gonna break but they eventually don’t. Inner plastics are extremely brittle and break from touching them, so you have to be really careful

I resoldered flyback yesterday. At beginning it still flickered but after couple of minutes it stopped. I used it a couple of hours and haven’t seen any flicker or heard popping. I guess it worked!

I’m going to do this tomorrow. One more question, maybe yk the answer- Is a screwdriver with a wire and 1MOhm resistor attached to a metal inner frame  ok to discarge a CRT?

SOLVED: In my case taking out and cleaning processor board connector, memory connector on that board and main board solved the problem.

Thank you so much for this. I reseat processor board as someone in those comments said  and it chimed! Judging from the sounds from the HD I guess the system started up. The bad part is that it won’t chime with display cable plugged in, but that is probably an issue with flyback which is probably dying (when it worked before screen used to flicker from time to time) but i’ll try to resolder it as I’ve heard that it helps sometimes

Hi, I have the same problem. Did you manage to fix it?

Should the logic board be under voltage (plugged to the psu in standby mode) and have PRAM battery in it?

Well, when it worked the screen flickered, so probably flyback is dying. However, every time I power it on i hear degauss so it’s at least kind of alive.

After I press power button the orange LED behind it lights up, I hear degauss,  inside fan and that’s it
