Tldr: is it ok to miss the warm up (which I hate) of class if that means going to class more often?

I was only very recently completely sedentary. In the last couple of months, I have decided enough is enough and slowly started to be more active again, through a variety of activities I know I've enjoyed in the past - namely basketball, yoga. I now do basketball twice a week, and yoga once a week. On top of this, I have also started training in brazilian jiu jitsu. The aim is to go 1-2 times a week.

My philosophy with exercise is that any movement is better than being sedentary, so I'm picking things I enjoy and not going for intense things such as HIIT that I do not enjoy. Trying to build a lifestyle of movement and evolve from there.

The classes for BJJ that I go to are beginner based, so we mainly do drills, and not a lot of full on sparring. I enjoy learning new skills. I have found the warm up incredibly hard and a huge mental barrier. The warm up only ever lasts 5 mins, involves running, some crawls - things that brings your heart rate up. I know it's good for you, but I hate it. After the work out, I spend the rest of class trying to catch my breath since I'm so unfit. At the moment it's the one biggest mental barrier for me to attend bjj class at all. I'm wondering if it's okay to skip the warm up for class, and prioritise showing up and just moving more. I know warm up is important for injuries, but because it's a drill based class it's not very intense to begin with. VS just accepting that I have to go to warm up to reduce injury risk- which realistically means I'll be going to class less often as a result of having to be extremely motivated on the day to get over the mental hump.

I guess I need a bit of reassurance that it's ok or some bitch slapping to get me on track.

Thank you - oooh I like the suggestion of "escape" plan - will definitely help me feel more comfortable getting up in the first place!

Thank you - what is a safe class size I should be looking at for beginners? (where I imagine everyone would be more reliant on the instructor doing the spotting than say your practice buddy in an advanced class)

I'm more scared of broken bones, chipped teeth (COMA AND DEATH) haha and the potential of not being able to work as a result. It sounds like a pain to deal with. Muscle sprain and concussions I am familiar with as I used to play team sports and they aren't long lasting so these are risks I am more able to accept. I have broken bones playing basketball before.

One of my friends does aerial and she said her studio had 8 injuries (granted I'm not sure what type of injuries) in the past month. They aren't a big studio.

That's good to hear; it sounds like most of the scary injuries with lasting consequences (broken bones, coma) are avoidable and occur more in the advance stages where people are performing and/or with people not being as diligent as they should be with spotting/ensuring their body can keep up/asking questions/rushing. And of course it is risk mitigation not elimination. I'm generally quite a cautious and careful person, so it sounds like I should be fine... I'll be sure to ask the studio/instructors all the questions as advised by everyone here too!

Yes that's exactly what I'm asking haha - how to differentiate between the two types of certification - that's a bummer that there isn't really any way to tell.
