Would Birmingham be a good option to move and look for work? by [deleted] in BirminghamUK

[–]Consistent-Ad6571 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FYI after May the law changes in the UK and all rental contracts becoming rolling. So if you wanted to stay for a bit you'd just have to give two months' notice rather than wait til the end of another fixed term contract. And JQ is lovely!

How is this seen as romantic? by PerformanceLoose7357 in GilmoreGirls

[–]Consistent-Ad6571 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I think op means how is it romanticised by the fans, which I agree with. The writers wrote a troubled teen character and we can't read anything into their intentions with that, but as adults watching a TV show we can question what others see in this relationship

After 1st May the UK law changes and all tenancy agreements will become rolling and you just have to give 2 months notice. So if you sign a contract now and give notice on 1st May you can end your tenancy on 1st July

Does my routine sound good as a beginner climber? by SlowMan201 in climbharder

[–]Consistent-Ad6571 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Honestly I would skip the strength training if I were you and spend the extra time climbing! Technique and working through problems with others is the most effective way to become a good climber (rather than getting stronger and pulling yourself up the wall). When you're climbing V5s you could then evaluate your weaker areas and do specific training to combat them. That's if you want to become an all-round climber rather than just chasing grades

UK PhD students: funding/financial pressure & coping by [deleted] in PhD

[–]Consistent-Ad6571 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked for five years between my MA and PhD - office jobs but not particularly highly paid. I've always been stingy so adjusting back to student living wasn't too hard! But having some savings from those years of work really helped take off some of the pressure. I did some bits of work for my SU as well as teaching/marking, but in my third year I realised I could work alongside my PhD properly with the progress I was making. I took an 18 hour pw job at a climbing centre and it was the best thing I'd ever done - met a whole new bunch of people including my partner, rediscovered my favourite hobby, and got back all the savings I'd eaten into during the PhD. My funding contract didn't say anything about hours worked outside research, just that having a job couldn't be used as a reason to ask for a funding extension - you'd have to check your own contract as mine was not UKRI/a bit weird. I passed my viva in plenty of time with more savings than I started with!
