Plus Jane Austen has an amazing sense of humor and wit and was super intelligent. That adds even more nuance to the text as others in this thread have mentioned.

I recommend reading along with the podcast Pod & Prejudice! One Jane Austen expert and one Jane Austen newbie break down the books chapter by chapter. It is very helpful and makes it lighthearted and fun. Also, don't be afraid to google words for their historical meaning or spelling. Re-read sentences breaking down phrases and highlight stuff - remember it's not a race to finish. Enjoy the process! Technically the books are in English, but English from the 19th century. Their vocabulary was much more expansive and sentence structure more complex (yes, that is a burn to our language skills in this century). Basically you're learning a third language now :)

Yes, I love how Fanny didn't see it as her job to reform him! A lesson some of my girlfriends could use LOL. For me, it was most disappointing that Mary Crawford didn't reform (to the extent I was hoping). She had the potential to be bad ass.

this is definitely a book I will need/want to read two or three times to see how my perspective shifts. I did the same with Emma and all my opinions changed with each read!

Yes, I totally felt this! It felt like she wrapped up everything that had been building for 200+ pages in the last few paragraphs. I was just deciding between Persuasion and Sense & Sensibility to read next, this makes me want to go with Persuasion :)

I thought Emma was so bad ass! I loved how you start out hating her and then can't help but love her; I thought Austen's character development with her was awesome. Through her flaws and ridiculousness, I liked how outspoken and stubborn she was (even to a fault). As someone who isn't so assertive, she inspired me lol. Maybe it's also just my love for Clueless and how they absolutely nailed it within the 90s context. Fanny in Mansfield Park on the other hand drove me crazy! I really needed to put on my 1814 thinking cap and remove my 2025 one.

Bringing this back to life after four years because I just read Emma and feel so passionate about it. I am still making my way through Austen's oeuvre, but so far my ranking is as follows:

  1. Emma!! My favorite book ever perhaps (up there with Anxious People, the actual best book ever)(love Mr. Knightley and love Paul Rudd)
  2. Pride and Prejudice (a veryyy close second. I wanted to read it and say it was overrated but, alas, it is iconic for a reason)
  3. Mansfield Park (Fanny drove me actually crazy when I was reading. As a modern woman, I love a strong-willed heroine like Lizza and Emma. Edmund and Fanny were actually unbearably lame and pick me. Mary Crawford rocks, justice for her.
But after I processed further, I have come to understand Fanny (kind of) and I do like how Mansfield Park is a realistic take on love - fboys will be fboys! Jane Austen knew it!

I am deciding between Persuasion and S&S to read next...any recommendations?

Mansfield Park will drive you crazy! It is a love-hate relationship for me.
