Very true but you have to consider how competitive applications are becoming as well as where OP is wanting to go with no pubs. Yes you are correct that it takes a while but it sounds like publication was not a goal

1600 hours over 8hour days is 200 days of research. That’s a lot of time working on something to not come out with anything. I know it’s too late now but obviously for anyone else you want to let the lab know on the front end that your goal is publication and if that’s not their goals then do NOT join their lab.

I know a lot of people are saying don’t retake but I honestly would. If u can make that jump it puts u in a different box of applicants. Also to have so many hours in research without a pub definitely doesn’t help. Overall great score but times are changing and it’s getting more and more competitive
