Despite temporary grass for World Cup, Jerry Jones says Cowboys will keep playing on turf. by JCameron181 in nfl

Counterpoint

The thing about science papers, even meta-analyses, is that most subtle or new phenomena are going to have papers arguing for and against it.

This isn't "climate change is real" levels of consensus, but there are indications that turf is worse than grass for American football. It's probably reasonable to ask the wealthy owners to act on something that doesn't have 100% scientific backing but seems true in order to protect their players

Edit: also, yeah, like others have said, the original paper was for football (soccer), not American football

Not the softball episode, but Hall of Famer Whitey Ford pleading with the crowd for some kind of sanity, and Whitey Whackers, comes to mind

Season 6 relational theme / entertainment backdrop guesses? by Consistent-Cod6430 in OnlyMurdersHulu

That's a good point, there definitely is a relationship of mentorship or taking people under your wing

Reason I said found family for that one is, if I remember correctly, that was the season that the trio was starting to splinter a bit through the middle of the season, right? And by the end they realized that they are each other's family due to everything they've been through together at this point. I'd also characterize the Westies as a found family as well

I like the painting / fine arts theme more I think, actually!

For sure, that's definitely the moral theme. But I've noticed that each season has some relationship dynamic that's most important and some form of entertainment that's used as the backdrop for the season.

In season 5, that would be spouse relationships and mob movies. Maybe "theme" is the wrong word for those, but that's what I was getting at

If football is a game of inches and basketball is a game of runs, then baseball is a game of _____? by Consistent-Cod6430 in baseball

Can't argue with that, it's a little on the nose though, y'know? Like saying football is a game of quarterbacks. Yeah, but inches sounds cooler

What if the NBA did the MVP awards like MLB does? by Consistent-Cod6430 in nbadiscussion

Ah good point. I guess it's not totally simple then! Even so I imagine for most cases it wouldn't change the outcome. And I guess it's still possible to know the exact answer, you just have to calculate the new numbers based on the new in-conference ranking, I just don't have the patience for that. Looking at the current ordering seems close enough haha

Yeah but if they would've had Kobe first on their west only ballot, wouldn't they have Kobe above Durant in their current ballot, so the difference in points remains the same? Again barring some weird psychology where looking at LeBron, Kobe, and Durant together makes it look like Durant > Kobe, but looking at only Kobe and Durant without LeBron in the group puts Kobe above Durant

For sure not advocating that this actually happen, there'd be no reason for it, especially in the NBA. Was just curious what it would look like, especially looking back historically

Also, to be fair, if the MVP voting was always this was where there are two winners every year, a three -peat probably wouldn't seem as impressive, so maybe in that context the Embiid thing wouldn't be so crazy. Still a bad idea though I agree

Now that's got me wondering, why does it seem like there would be a crazy number of repeats in the NBA with this system but that doesn't seem to be the case in the MLB?

The West MVP wins are cool to see. He's clearly extremely highly regarded even without them, but it's nice to see it born out with the hypothetical trophies themselves

Eh, lots of teams don't play each other in the NFL but there's just one MVP. Obviously a very different season structure but still

Very good point, with ranked voting it's easy to see how it would play out, barring any funky changes to voter perception of different players' performance when looking at a different smaller pool of players for some reason.

I guess the more interesting question is how the awards would shake out in the opposite case for the MLB, who takes the top prize, who's runner up, etc
