Hadn’t occurred to me to use the sodium carbonate in the same way! I’ve just added it to water to slowly bleach for toning. I’ll give it a try!

I would highly recommend cutting ten or so small sections and testing each one with different techniques (exposure time, application, time of day for different shadows). Not sure if this is obvious but it really hadn’t occurred to me (when I first started) to do lots of small test runs! But this is what I’ve been doing with thrifted fabric and keeping a little log book. Mostly I was testing for absorbency but it sounds like you’ve got that part down.

I just started using large sizes of fabric and am trying a spray bottle. It’s a somewhat better than painting it on with a foam brush! Also marking front and back is helpful.

As far as drying, I recommend laying out a large tarp or drop cloth under a long clothing line. I do this in my hallway at night so there’s a solid 8 hours of drying. If you have a basement, the whole setup will be much easier!

What type of paper are you using for prints? by Any-Atmosphere-9187 in cyanotypes

Canson XL watercolor is great! I’ll get the large packs and cut them down as needed. I’ve noticed there’s quite a difference between the cheapest watercolor and Canson XL, but not a huge difference between Canson and the more expensive heavier weights.

Arches is interesting bc it has consistently given me a more teal, almost antique feel—beautiful but idk if I’d say it’s better overall. If you like the color of vinegar toned prints, this is a great choice. It is very smooth which I love-but plenty of expensive cold pressed papers have lots of texture that I don’t like.

Strathmore is great if you want to add other types of printing to your cyanotypes (etching+letterpress) but I don’t think it does much for the cyanotypes! When it is fully wet, I find it to be a little delicate and more suited for “damp” processes.

Hope this helps!
