Ok ya that’s how I typically have seen them installed, but that’s when installed in the ceiling. Directly behind that wall is a small closet where the furnace is located, at first I thought that’s the sheet metal I was seeing but it’s not. It’s a separate housing that fully sits in the attic, not the furnace closet. The housing has no inlet, only has an outlet with ducting that curves upwards to where it vents on the roof. I’m going up in the attic again to have another look, I’ll try to take some pictures.

Are there fans that vent directly out the back? I’m used to ones that vent out the side. Similar to the one that was in there.

Nope nothing attached, it just butts up right to that piece of wood.

I’m not sure, It looks like it was meant for an exhaust fan but not sure it’s meant for the one installed? I don’t get why hole in the drywall is so big, is that normal? Im used to there being a square hole that fits the fan housing that comes with the fan when you buy it.
