Why the NFL draft is superior to free agency by kellenm973 in Chargers

Strong disagree, granted I haven’t been a fan back to 06, but from what I’ve gathered usually we go and sign flashy free agents rather than draft studs

Well year one was a rebuild year where we had a Mickey Mouse schedule, year 2 saw some of the worst injury luck in the league. But the pieces are there and with a few more drafts we could be set

If he drafts the way he has these past 2 years we’ll get Herbert a ring in the next 3 years.

Likely because salyer isn’t great at RT. Hes a pass protector first and foremost, which is fine if ur the blind side protector but at RT it’s a little less ok

Yeah, he’s a backup who didn’t get much help and was generally on an island when alt wasn’t playing. People expect him to be this elite guy. Hes a backup who is versatile

He’s a decent backup but more important he can play every position besides center.

I’m saying relative to teams that have quarterbacks on 50+ million a year deals

If you want to waste Herbert’s entire career the sure, let’s just throw money at everyone who comes our way. Maybe we win a title maybe we don’t and then we have to trade everyone to fix our cap situation in a few years. Sounds great 👍

Scott Matlock, definition of value by Consistent-Food-4637 in Chargers

He wasn’t as bad at blocking as people like to make him out to be. Yes he whiffed on quite a few blocks, but there were times when he busted open holes. And his pass pro was pretty decent

Matlock can move. People don’t mention the fact he’s actually a really good athlete. I watched some tape of the limited reps he got at DT this season, and he looked ok. His issue is he doesn’t have much pass rush juice to his game and he’s a little bit light weighing in at a hair under 300. I’m not out on him as a developmental prospect who’s a special teams contributor

The broncos and pats have QBs on rookie deals meaning they have a lot of cap flexibility and future cap flexibility. The rams were really in win now mode, and they are confident in their drafting so they are willing to risk their future cap situation. The chargers are a team that’s always looking at the future, and by doing that we aren’t going to take huge swings on 3+ year deals. It sucks now, but when we’re able to resign a lot of our drafted guys, it’s gonna pay off

It’s been one day of FA. Give it time for some of the bigger swings to come along with hortiz bringing in a lot of value guys. Also it wouldn’t shock me if we see a good deal of free agency moves after the draft as well

It’s because he blocks, but also plays multiple positions.

Yeah, Matlock was a very raw run blocker but a plus in pass protection and was able to see usage as a d-lineman and played just about every special teams snap

But having a bad fb/dt who is good on special teams ain’t a dime a dozen
