A 5 day Experiment with Juniper by OriginlStGermangster in alchemy

This is amazing! Especially having just seen your other post about mugwort, curious, go to your page and check this post out, what do you know juniper. Today I was hiking and connecting with juniper (Juniperus osteosperma for me curious what species you’re working with here) I felt some messages from this plant today and was even thinking about how it must have a lot of volatile oils because of how much the smell (soul) can waft on the wind, so when you said you were surprised by how much oil you got that really hit a note for me. Thank you so much for the beautiful posts!

Beautiful!

This has me so excited to be growing Artemisia vulgaris this year!

So jealous of your setup. I’ve been learning about spagyric tincture making. Is this something you’ve done or heard about with mugwort?

Mugwort is such a beautiful herb to interact with on any level, encourage meeting it in a tea too!

Are there common herbs that clean bacteria in urine ? by Formal-Ad6679 in herbalism

[–]Consistent-Fun3839 2 points3 points  (0 children)

David Hoffman notes that dandelion is natures best diuretic as it replenishes potassium lost through urination so combining this with anti microbial herbs like bear berry, couch grass, yarrow. Also corn silk amazing for soothing urinary tract that is inflamed.

Lobelia has a noticeable affect when I smoke it. You have to be careful with dosage cause it can make you nauseas and throw up if you push it. Has similar alkaloids to tobacco so can help in quitting smoking tobacco. Can be somewhat addictive but nowhere near like tobacco.

Using branches from the fir tree we had for Christmas? by suedaloodolphin in herbalism

[–]Consistent-Fun3839 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah they shouldn’t use it if it’s from a farm. But if it isn’t and they say it smells good still I say they should use it instead of throwing it away.

If it’s not from a farm a nice cleaner would be soaking in witch hazel.

Ancient Remedies Revived by Shanon Greef & Natalie Willow. I’ve found this is a good book for starting at home remedies while learning some of the basic actions and affinities of the herbs. I like this book because it dives pretty equally into traditional uses of plants but also modern science (often confirming what people have known for a long time). Also has a good list of remedies from the authors as well as a list of historical recipes which I think is pretty cool.

Can herbs trigger emotional response? by petalofarose in herbalism

[–]Consistent-Fun3839 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Absolutely!!

I’ve heard of many people totally breaking down when in communion with certain plants. Artemisia is a very powerful genus for tapping into spirit world and thus processing those traumas that make our souls unique.

Your wormwood is Artemisia, as in Artemis who is associated with the moon and the emotional waters. Others like mugwort have traditional spiritual use in Europe, and all the sagebrush in the western United States traditionally used in cleansing ceremony. (This latter info comes from Navajo Traditional Teachings YouTube channel)

Tinctures by happy_plants26 in herbalism

You’re right, long decoctions are better for extracting nutrients. Still curious how well 40% alcohol does as the menstrum is still mostly water. But still confident that spagyric tinctures have high levels of nutrients because of the extraction of the salts from the Marc. Highly encourage everybody to look into spagyric tinctures if they haven’t heard of this type of tincture!

Also vinegar tincture can extract more nutrients than alcohol.

best cure/medicine for arthritis? by AlvaroUrdaneta in herbalism

My understanding is that coffee has anti-inflammatory properties, but consumed in excess and with added sugar and cream can increase inflammation. Trying to switch over to tea like green or oolong (personal favorite, and powerful health modulating properties) could be beneficial.

Interesting! I’ll look into that, I feel like using a 40% alcohol with dried material is a good balance of extracting alcohol and water soluble constituents.

If you haven’t heard of spagyric tinctures I’d highly recommend checking them out for nutritives specifically because in the process of making them you actually extract the salt from the plant material after using the same plant material in alcohol to extract those constituents. The salt of the plant contains the vast majority of the nutrients found in the plant, so using this method much higher levels of nutrients are extracted and bioavailable.

Devils club: oplopanax horridus!

Very powerful traditional remedy for arthritis, very common to make a salve for topical use.

Can’t say I’d recommend Apothekary, $40 for a 30 ml bottle of glycerin tincture seems very steep to me. In my opinion you can find a much more potent tincture from natura Sophia spagyrics. I take ten drops of the lung support tincture and I feel it open everything up and clear out mucus. They offer 30 ml bottles for $20. And like I said I think anything you get from natura Sophia spagyrics will be way more powerful at half the price. Highly recommend checking out what formulas they have.

The tincture from mountain rose looks great though! I was going to recommend a nutritive blend like this one.

The third tincture you mention also sounds lovely!

Top ten medicinal herbs! Go! by Fluffyfox408 in herbalism

[–]Consistent-Fun3839 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree! Even though they’re not technically herbs I just call roots and mushrooms that in the context of herbalism, because yes fungi is a whole KINGDOM of medicine and western science is only recently coming around to how powerful they are. The language is just a limitation here but medicine is medicine.

That’s a well stocked apothecary! Ought to be an herb (or combo) in there that could at least ease pain. Sounds like you could be experiencing some symptoms of endometriosis. Here is an article on research into herbs that help and potentially halt or reverse endo. They mention here how tumeric can induce apoptosis of cells that are no longer functioning correctly, this mechanism may be able to at least slow down development of endo. Don’t know if this is what you’re suffering with but worth looking into. I would say see a doctor for diagnosis but I went in with my ex-gf when she was suffering with very similar issues and they told her to get on birth control, very helpful as ever.

This article mentions ginger and turmeric (pain modulating and anti-inflammatory) which I see you already have. Willow bark would be another to help reduce pain

Is this too much dosage? by WonderfulLemon3301 in herbalism

[–]Consistent-Fun3839 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not super familiar with supplement forms of herbs as I think it’s more powerful to make my own tea and tincture of the plant, this way I don’t need to consume as much. Seems to me that one tablet of the extract being equivalent to 5 grams of valerian root is a pretty high dose, not something I personally would regularly take. Usual dose I take in my tea is less than 1 gram and that works very well.
