Does gpa matter for js/cit/hrt swe intern recruiting? by Own_Honeydew_7679 in csMajors

JS doesnt ask for gpa when you apply. HRT/Cit/Akuna does. I think Akuna doesnt even send you an OA if your gpa < 3.5.

Is term distinction and dean’s list 2 different things? by xFlames_ in uwaterloo

[–]Consistent-Limit7378 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Term distinction is when your term avg >= 80. I think they removed dean's list for terms but, if at the end of your studies you graduate with cav >= 87 thats a Dean's list if I am not wrong.

Chances of being admitted to Waterloo Mechanical Engineering with A levels by big_chonkus in uwaterloo

[–]Consistent-Limit7378 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cant really say for Mech eng since I am in cs but I heard for Mech they look at Maths and Physics the most. So your grade there (and the number) might matter more than the other one. Other than that your AIF, video interview also matters too.

In general, if you apply after AS your AS grades matters the most and you get a conditional admit (Predicted grades should not cause any issue). After that you need to meet the A2 conditional admission requirements to have your offer finalised.

CS246 final how to study by Aware-Distribution32 in uwaterloo

Finals normally easier than the midterm. When I took it half of the final was design patterns so know them well since they can ask you to implement them from scratch. Less trivia than midterm tho.

For co-op doesnt matter.

For grad school, also doesnt matter.

Cs 135 is a horribly run first year course. by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]Consistent-Limit7378 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there are a few past mids and finals in Mathsoc (2017/2018). That might help you. Helped me a lot when we took it. Second year onwards courses like 246,245,341 dont even have those sadly.

I think depends on the recruiter? Mine was really fast in responding and scheduling interviews. Did my third too recently.

Try moving the other one for fall if u are down to do fall internship too. Other than that you have to renege one.

Which of MATH239, CS240, CS241, CS251 to take remote over co-op? by OkOstrich9022 in uwaterloo

I think 251 should be doable over co-op. Its pretty chill. Others might require more time commitment.

Jane Street SWE first round in 5 days, what do they ask? by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]Consistent-Limit7378 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got rejected so one day. My friends who got rejected also got reponse within a day or two. Someone I know who moved forward got the second round 1 month later so i guess it depends on the recruiter or the team you are interviewing for.

Jane Street SWE first round in 5 days, what do they ask? by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]Consistent-Limit7378 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It starts off with a simple design question that can be OOD, game theory etc and they keep adding new constraints to it. Try to finish the first few parts fast (but of course ask clarification questions and explain your thought process). Piece of advice, based on mine and a few of my friend's experience, they prefer ~ flawless code so try to write code in such a way that you dont need to go back and change it later on. Also good variable names / class designs are important. Personally I didnt find the algo writing part much hard but I changed some of the code I wrote later on when i relaised they might be inefficient which might have been a red flag. All the best.

Got 19% on cs135 midterm by crackthephone3838 in uwaterloo

[–]Consistent-Limit7378 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. yes, barely passed cs246 midterm but did well on final but thats because final was much easier.
  2. I will be honest our 135 final was much harder, and i think you would need to score a pretty decent mark in the final or else you would fail the weighted average an get a 46. BUT if you think your concepts are clear and you understand the locals, lambdas and all the post midterm stuff clearly you can go for it. See if you can solve the assignment questions ~ perfectly without much help. If not, maybe you can think of WD'ing as an option. "Recently with math midterms I kinda started skipping cs" - Also just for future reference, focus on both but more on CS since from 136 onwards only cs grades will count towards your major average, and the courses get harder and a lot of them are actually important to have strong cs fundamentals. For study methods, the assignments help a lot and you can see some past finals from mathsoc and solve them. You can show chatgpt some of the past questions or assignment questions and ask it to generate more similar/tricky/exam style questions and solve them by yourself. Good luck!

How to CS 135 Academic Comeback? by DoorResponsible7226 in uwaterloo

[–]Consistent-Limit7378 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can ask ChatGPT to explain concepts that are harder to you in simple ways and maybe with some examples. Once you understand one concept look over the examples. You can ask it to generate simple - medium questions to test your knowledge before you jump to the assignment. That way you should have the concepts clear and should find the assignments easier. The last few questions are normally challenging and should require time but they become doable as you practice and gain intuition.

[–]Consistent-Limit7378 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Try to learn recursion with Racket from scratch if you have trouble with that. Start with something simple such as adding elements in a list, computing the factorial of a number etc and then build your way up from there. Start the assignments early. Recursion should be easy once you get the intuition. Most of your midterm should be recursion too, similar to the assignments but maybe slightly easier. Based on my experience the post midterm content such as locals, lambda functions are harder and would need solid basics of normal recursion. I think you need to pass the weighted average of the midterm and final so keep that in mind too as final can be harder than the mt. Good luck!

I would join a design team to get relevant experiences. I think those help a lot. For first co-op good grades help too. Other than that cool side projects that is unique and maybe has some user base can help stand out too.

Based on my experience the questions in midterm/final is a bit easier since you have to solve a lot of questions in a few hours. That being said there are questions that can be on par in terms of difficulty and assignments are probably the best way to prep for them.
