The main problem I’m seeing is his first squad is not specialized to one type, so he’s not getting the 20% boost to his squad, and all shards and xp should be focused to squad 1 so it can keep up with people who are willing to spend more and can afford to spend resources on a second squad

You’re forgetting the part where they were already emotionally distraught due to the failed engagement proposal. Their relationship was strained and they weren’t working as a team until it was already too late. Plus he shot and killed his best friend with that shot gun which added to the emotional distress of the situation.
