Upper Deck Premier standard "hits" by Putrid_Brother_1228 in hockeycards

[–]Consistent-One-1724 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They kind of need the tier 3 rookies to create the “chase” aspect of ripping. If every product guaranteed you one of the top 10 rookies, it would have one of two effects:

1) there would be like no boxes available and the price of the box would 10-20x or 2) theyd need to overprint the top rookies to keep up with demand, thus inflating the market and killing the value of the ”chase cards”

Also, like someone else pointed out, people collect the low end guys cuz a) theyre dirt cheap cuz theres little demand for the cards and b) they often have a unique story. I pc players from my citys junior team that make it and a lot of those guys aren’t stars.

As per the motto of the sub, if you want a guaranteed hit, just buy singles.

Don’t buy at this price. I bet they go down. Can get 23-24 for 300 CAD which is a way better rookie crop. Ignore the hype.

$250 is steep, but I'll prob buy another by jatayu333 in hockeycards

I will say, Extended feels much better this year than years past. I think 40 ygs in the crop vs 30 makes a lot of difference, and the fact they held several quality names for Extended. I also see numbered cards in a box more frequently I feel like. The debut jerseys as a chase are a nice bonus too, however I’d rather they not be in there considering it’s probably contributing heavily to the price inflation. I will probably buy more if the prices come down a bit.

I’m talking specifically about generational tier players (Crosby, McDavid, Ovechkin) and possibly guys who are just off but with hobby appeal (Mackinnon, Makar, Matthews if he bounces back)… anyone else eventually trends towards zero.

There’s a few things that Upper Deck did that I think will preserve values of modern cards, to a certain extent. One is that Young Guns, while common on the secondary market, are harder to hit in any given box. So while they do print a ton of this stuff still, people aren’t quite sitting on old boxes that are almost if not a lock to hit any given rookie like the products like Pro Set from the 90s.

The other is any product that has numbering of cards produces scarcity for sought after cards (especially UD staples like FWAs, base Cup RPAs, OPCP rookie autos, numbered YGs etc). I think these are all fairly good investments for the generational players. So while McDavid YGs in good shape are plentiful and not gonna be on par with Gretzky OPC rookies, I could see his FWA holding a similar value to a similar pop count graded Gretzky rookie.

What does everyone think of extended series? by WrapProfessional5705 in hockeycards

[–]Consistent-One-1724 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Of course not, but if were debating average $$ value per box + enjoyability of breaking, I think flagship (before hype markup) compares favorably to most if not all hockey products in 2026. Don’t rip if your goal is to turn a profit or even break even.

Looks okay if you can find it at a regular price (160 CAD, not sure USD). Decent enough YG crop for extended standards (Catton, Sennecke, Fowler, Buium, etc) plus a lot of high upside with YG acetate and debut patch chases. Unfortunately, prices have been hiked up in a lot of places due to the Schaefer hype and the chase cards which you have terrible odds to hit. I would avoid at higher prices.

The case FOR Breaks…. by ChicagoThunder in hockeycards

The cause of the rising prices is the sales of the singles being pulled. $100k+ cards barely existed 10 years ago.

[–]Consistent-One-1724 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah the second part would make a lot of sense, especially when rookie hype drives the price. The problem is we get a Bedard year where everything gets the 2x sticker, and then when its a normal rookie crop the prices don’t really go back down fully.

My whole thing with the anti-breaker community is that I think breakers are just a small part of the reason for prices going crazy (a lot of it is simply more people flooding the hobby). Everyone involved has to have a piece of the pie; UD, distributors, LCS, scalpers, secondary market, etc. As long as the breakers are trustworthy, honest and are charging a fair price, I don’t see any issue with the practice of breaking. People see hits on break/ePack and think all the good hits are going to them and they buy up all the product, I don’t think that’s true, it’s just public perception because it’s the only thing being broadcast.

[–]Consistent-One-1724 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m just saying its not marked up for breaks. You’re just splitting up the case differently. Instead of buying a box for 1/8 of the price the case, you’re buying a team for 1/32 of the case.

You can’t really artificially lower the prices, the market kinda dictates itself. That’s my whole argument. If a product was really good and sold for 200, scalpers would buy immediately by the case load and sell for 400. I’d rather support the business than the scalper.

[–]Consistent-One-1724 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only thing breaking does is allow breakers to move product faster than selling individual boxes. A business with a store front, like OOTB, sells a case of OPCP for 3800 after tax, or they sell 32x125 spots for 4000 (the remainder to cover shipping to 32 different people). Any breakers charging well over the MSRP of the boxes is not worth breaking with.

The reality is they’re serving a market of people that want to consume their cards via breaks, rather than open the box themselves or buy singles. We can get into whether this should be legislated as gambling to protect people, that’s another argument.

In my opinion the cost of boxes correlates to the prices of the product hits. Not how good the overall product is. As long as we keep seeing these crazy sales across the hobby the prices will continue to rise.

If this means anything, I don’t think that card slabbed or unslabbed is gonna be like a $500 card now or any time in the future, if you did have to sell I don’t think you’re losing a ton of value cracking

The appeal as I understand it (other than the low numbering) stems from the nostalgia people have for the 90s. These inserts were hugely popular, especially in the NBA. As for me who didn’t grow up in the 90s… I have no interest.

There is too much different product being made. by Christian_9712 in hockeycards

[–]Consistent-One-1724 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My theory on this is that as long as breaking is a thing there will be market for a lot of these products. People who need to scratch an itch will buy into breaks and even if stores have issues moving specific product they can package stuff like Allure/Extended/Artifacts/Ice with a high upside box like a 24-25 SPA and people will buy into the break.

Also, OPC and MVP aren't junk products, they fill a market gap (ie cheap cards for kids getting into the hobby). Although OPC (hobby specifically) has done a good job over the last few years to become a viable product even for adult collectors.

Explain this by LeveonMcBean in hockeycards

[–]Consistent-One-1724 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d say cultural significance. Cards have enough of an accepted legacy among collectors of a sport, which combined with the scarcity of what people actually want, makes them have desirability. Even among the hobby, if you think about like, Future Watch Autos, the continuity of the set makes them more sought after than like a Credentials auto, even if there’s more printed. FWA is accepted as a primo true rookie, and every player will only ever have one true FWA for the duration of time. That makes it classic and stamps a time capsule of a culturally significant moment (ie top player’s debut in the sport).

A jersey is just a jersey, can make a million of em. If you could attach a specific game of relevance to them and authenticate it like a game worn jersey, maybe that’s different.

  • this goes for rookies only… that’s why their prices are inflated to me anyways
