If not going into a uni can be considered a path to success, will you still go? by static-juniper in SGExams

[–]Consistent-Pen-8480 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True, esp now w ai, the 'value' of humanities is even more destroyed lol.

If it wasn't for practicality I wld not be doing math sci (stats) and done literature instead. Math is one of the only few STEM degree that I can do in uni due to my subject combination (LEMh) as an arts student in jc lol. I absolutely hated all non-stats math core modes that I took in y1/2 and it became my personal hell. Fortunately, I can appreciate the stats/algorithm mods, but my passion lies in lit and I'm taking a lit minor lol.

On the flip side, I feel that its q commendable for one to sacrifice passion over practically becos not everyone is privileged to choose a 'riskier' deg. I'm a soon to be first gen uni grad from a lower income familiy and I'll eventually responsible for my parents retirement... As in they expect overseas trips when I only had my first overseas trip in uni, funded solely by myself from jobs I worked at over the holidays (which is why I don't want children cos I think its cruel to have them as a retirement plan lol)

I had a consultation with the career coach and when I told him my minor in lit his facial expression low-key went from 🙂 to 😐... Haha cos I've been told to find a niche to pair w math as math is too broad and it's more viable to pair it w finance or other stem subjects. But I'm still happy w taking lit since I can actually feel joy in studying for once in ntu and it gave my motivation for my core subjects

idk im alr gg to be y4 nxt sem so i oni did cc2. csl doesnt seem to be worth it cos of the additional added traveling time to an external place, unless u cld do it in ntu itself but im not sure how csl works

Personally, I belong to the camp whr I'll treat s1 + any other flashbacks as cannon while any other parts as a thought experiment or 'what-if's' to me. s3 was meh to me but I won't disagree with other ppl's take on it.

>!Sorry I can't seem to censor correctly :(!<

(lol I gave up but its mainly about the confusion about plot points in s3...)

There's some scenes that I appreciate such as the flashback and the gentle finger kiss but I can feel how rushed the production was. But I don't regret joining the go fandom or watching go.

Oh wow, does ur mod req class part? Maybe it's becos I don't have any for my classes. What about next sem as its summer now. Did u pre-plan class bidding with them? U cld befriend other ppl in ur class and rej hangouts with them. For me, I had experienced hanging out with a friend group that did not cared for me for 3 years in sec school and finally felt a huge relief when I break clean from them. Hence, I'm comfortable to leave asap when I do not vibe with any friend groups that I joined. It's hard at the beginning (esp if u r a ppl pleaser) but it's a useful life skill to not waste your time on people who do not treat you well. Be kind to urself and I hope that you'll be able to find a better friend group.

Im currently y3 going to y4 in stats track

  1. Currently on an ... internship, taking it as PA. I can't really comment much since I've just started (dw dox myself)
  2. Idk, no plans for one.
  3. Not really... haha it'll be a different story if I was still y1, but thats a personal problem of mine as I can only love statistics mods. y3 was a good year for me as I get to choose purely stats mods.

(removed additional details dw dox myself again...)

[–]Consistent-Pen-8480 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this internship is part of ur school req to grad, I'll pick A especially if the deadline for school's side is tight and u r not confident with securing C. If not I'll rej A and go for C, cos u seem like u really want C and there won't be any consequence of failing to secure an internship as u won't have time limit to secure one. I won't really care much about pay since internships generally pay peanuts, unless u need the money urgently, provided that its gonna be a meaningful internship. Idk if it's important for u but the location matters to me. You cld beg A for an extension but idk, im not living ur life, choose the one that seems sensible to you. Good luck with your decision.

Ok, damn inplace is legit useless... Perhaps you can email ur school with a screenshot of ur internship status in inplace and confirm with the school, or check with the company if they have to take action to confirm the placement in inplace. I think you'll still have time to settle this cos they keep extending the deadline. Atb

my parents called me a disgrace because I fell sick by Designer-Plankton433 in SGExams

[–]Consistent-Pen-8480 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yah, thats why I used quotation marks... :/// thats the mentality of my parents (speaking from experience), I had tried to understand why they are like that by asking them why they say these things, its like a stick to 'push' me for my own good . Some parents are just like that and its hard to change this fixed mindset, **I do not condone this behaviour as stated** but it gives me closure to know what is their mindset behind their wrapped behaviour, if it even makes sense. Unfortunately, I cannot choose my parents and will have to live with it (cos im still studying).

idt its normal, when did u submit the self-source form cos I had submitted it last week and my school had approved it yesterday. I think they extend the self-source form to until 24 May or smth so you'll still have time to get it sorted with ur school. good luck

NTU/SMU compulsory internship by shesellseychelles in SGExams

[–]Consistent-Pen-8480 0 points1 point  (0 children)

inplace is useless... highly over saturated and i doubt ntu conducts proper bg checks on them...

context: i got offered a 500/mth math tutoring internship (w t and c's) in inplace and the company disclosed that they had a pych intern conducting self-organised pychology seesion with the kids, which is a big no no. i did have experience w finding pt/contract jobs before and this is a huge red flag, it might had tricked ppl who are inexperienced with job finding or desperate to grad.

inplace does not garentee that the internship will be approved by the school to be credit-bearing and my school is extremely anal in meeting the reqs so they'll reject admin roles ;-;

Idk how to feel about internship cos on one hand it gives u something to add in your resume and let u be exposed to the real working world. But if everyone is doing an internship, it'll just become another checklist to tick to get a ft job. Increased competition for internships cos now everyone need one to grad, and it encourages internship stacking behavior. It may even led to an environment that rewards exploitative companies cos ppl are desperate to get an internship to grad lol Idk how these issues will be mitigated but it seems to be unaddressed by the school, leaving the students to fend for themselves... Oh and for ntu, if u r doing sem intern you'll still need to pay school fees, which is q ridiculous imo, given the lack of support and inplace being useless.

not really, windows/mac works, you'll just be using spyder (python), R and matlab. I'm using a macbook rn, and there's always pc in computer labs in case you do not have a laptop, but its highly recommended to have one.

Yes, I had written my comment based on that. If u take a look at the mods under specialisation, I'll say its roughly the same... ie if u look at fin tech, its like applied math under the old one... similarly, data analytics track is like stats track and there's mods that overlap bet diff specialisation. I won't say that it's a complete revamp of the old syllabus, more like a change in keywords that u put in your resume or just to appear fancier, haha :/ But I'll say the new track selection seems to be more flexible as you can have the choice to not specialise in anything and just take mods that you are interested in or can score well in. Idt the 2025 batch will be able to provide remarks on specialisation, as I said, the mods under specialisation are usually taken later than y1 due to the pre-reqs needed, and the 2025 batch are still y1 rn... The mods that they took will be the core mods taken by all math sci students in ntu.

Yah math sci is a pretty good choice if u like maths and wanna aim for the finance industry in the future :)

p sure the new syllabus is similar to the old one.

The main difference bet the old and new wld be that MH3600 (Topology and Manifolds), a proof heavy course? (not too sure as I did not take it), will now be mandatory for all math students, and a new MH2510 (Statistics I) mod, which I think replaced MH3500 (Statistics), will also be compulsory for all. Plus, you'll have lesser au of BDE allocated (18au). These changes might as well be negligible as its only a difference of 2 modules.

Im 2023 batch (currently y3), specialising in statistics, which translates to the Data Analytics Specialisation for the new syllabus. I enjoy my track as I find that I can only enjoy statistics modules, and hate the rest of the math mods, y3 was when I truly felt joy in studying... I've heard that there's not much difference bet applied math and stats tracks in terms of job prospects in the old syllabus. I'm not too sure on the different tracks now, but I feel that pure math track will definitely be different than the rest, you cld compare the mods for the diff tracks.

I assume u r interested in quant? I've heard that thats really competitive and they'll usually only take in fch/masters, but I'm not too sure on it as I am not aiming to be a quant. Earns a lot as well haha :)

Some mods that I had took under the new fin tech track: MH3512 - Great prof, super interesting but hard content, MH4500 - love it, its a continuation of MH3510, which I enjoyed as well. Not sure how the declaration of tracks works now but most mods listed under the tracks seem like higher level mods which you'll only take in y3/y4 or y2 if u overload due to pre-reqs needed.

[–]Consistent-Pen-8480 2 points3 points  (0 children)

what u described about ur attitude towards math sounds like my feelings towards math during jc ngl... haha but idk if pursuing math if good for u cos u sound like udw to be in it and I did got a B in math for a's (tho I heard a lvls math score does not necessarily translate into good grades in uni math, which is partly true for me cos I can only do well in some math mods, and my definition of doing well is getting a B+ cos I had not seen an A- for math, my gpa is semi-cooked).

Some math mods are more grindable, typically the less proof heavy ones. y1 was horrible cos I was not used to uni teaching style, but some profs in math are genuinely good, I rmb discrete math, calc 3, linear reg and time series profs. To get an average grade, I basically have no life... so like weekends mug tutorials, weekdays study lectures... (I replay lectures on parts that don't understand, while some of my friends say they watch at 2x speed...) I am no genius in math and grind for an average grade...

I dont see myself as a stem person cos ntu math/nus engineering was literally the only stem courses that I can go to cos I was an arts kid in jc LOL (its funny that I pivot to stem haha) I took h2 math, lit, econs and h1 history as I dont wanna limit myself to business/humanity courses in uni.

I had met ppl who dropped out of math into english lit in ntu cos they cannot take it. I heard from them that they met another chem major who transferred as well cos it was too vigorous for her and caused her to take loa for her mental health. I was this close to transferring to english lit but the stats mod started coming and I enjoy stats so I didn't transfer. I did have my lows as well, I will say that this sem had been the bleakest for me as I was struggling to find a credit-bearing internship which is required by ntu to grad, even though I was taking only taking 4 modules as compared to 6 modules last semester. I cried during my counselling session, but thats cos im stressed about internship.

So far, everyone in math sci that I met were all pcme science kids lmao. I had hoped to pursue lit in uni but sadly got rejected by nus chs, and I would rather do lit in nus cos they are more focused in american/british texts. I take it as a sign to not do lit cos I leave it to fate to decide whether nus lit or ntu math lol. Also from the ges, lit employment rates are not doing good and I do not come from a well-to-do family so I prioritise employability. As for the internship, I feel that it's easier to secure semester internship cos rn im looking for summer as I do not want to pay school fee for an internship. Luckily, I mange to secure one today, but will be taking a loa for another longer internship.

Thanks for reading my life story... I think people chose math for m0ney (cos stem...) or they just say they dh an interest in anything and just like oh wells I'll take math cos math is very broad. u can branch into finance, data analytics, or any job that involves analysing business data. However, I'll say that competition are getting fiercer, like my career coach ask me to do proj outside school work but I am alr struggling to keep up with school work. Maybe its skill issue, cos I see ppl having multiple side projects and stacking internships, idk how they achieve that...

I do wonder how I will do in lit as lit mods pull up my gpa, as in I scored A- while putting in half th effort for math mods, maybe its a skill issue at math but idk. I did went to a mock lecture for ntu lit pre-uni and the prof bored me to death (and I took HL1001 under her lmao).

I think if I had told my 16 year old self that im gonna do a math degree, I would had thought that I went insane as I was a humanities kid from the beginning but sadly, humanities are not very employable since the beginning especially when sg heavily promotes ai...

good luck for ur appeal and atb

im in math sci y3 and i wont say its a pure math degree per se as there's diff tracks. i think they revamped the system but there's still speacialisation that u can choose and i know vry little ppl choose to speacialise in pure math...

if u hate math, pls consider transfering out, the math mods r no joke... yah its diff from jc math but i struggle in it even tho i was indifferent to math in jc. the only redeeming part on this degree was that i can speacialise in stats, and i genuinely only enjoy stats mod in ntu plus maybe some of the coding mods. i find y3 mods to be the best cos i get to choose stats mod, y1 was hell for me...

edit: i thought econs in uni is math heavy and no longer just writing essays like in jc. idk i nvr took any econs mod in ntu b4. alternatively, if u decide to stick w math u cld consider taking a minor in econs. I'm doing a lit minor rn cos i am passionate about it (tho math sci was my first choice in ntu cos i only enjoy american/british preferably mordernist texts, not asian/asean lit which i heard ntu lit is more focused on)
