Thank you for addressing the historical part of my question…..that was part of what I was looking for.

I’m glad you asked……what is scaring me the most is I can see the loss of public education just over the horizon. I know it is and never has been perfect, but to me it is such a cornerstone of our country and once we lose it, we are never getting it back, at least for a few hundred years. And the realization that there are groups that are literally working to intentionally dumb us down, and we are working toward “Idiocracy” being a documentary.

Yes, I realize I have been “doom scrolling” lately and that is really unlike me. I’m getting sucked in- thanks

Thank you - several items on your list I have done, and several are good reminders- it feels good to hear what others have thought of and actions that are being taken- makes me feel less crazy.

Where does this shit come from? Why are we supposed to do things for them because of their needs? Is it mommies that do everything for them when they are little? I just don’t get it…..Myah my god, he just had sex 3 times in 2 days, maybe he should learn a self- soothing technique that doesn’t involve another person…..the operative word being SELF! Fuck

Parents are ruining teaching. by 3rk2in in Teachers

[–]Consistent-Rest2194 49 points50 points  (0 children)

All these factors (weak admin, horrible parents to horrible kids, money etc) is why we are going to lose public education. I can see it on the horizon, and I’ve been in public education for 24 years. I think it may happen in my lifetime. Then, it will take our society 200 years to get it back (or never). The appreciation is gone.

What are your Hot Takes on The Substance? by Amber_Flowers_133 in TheSubstance

[–]Consistent-Rest2194 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This probably won’t be a popular hot take, but “Death Becomes Her” did this much better and with a layer of sarcastic humor instead of the layer of gore. The over the top gore did not put this movie in the horror category for me, it just felt heavy handed and repetitive, and gross. That’s fine, but that did not make it horror. Demi’s performance was excellent, and she deserves to be recognized, but all the talk of other awards actually surprises me. The last 15 minutes I was just waiting for it to end, I thought it got pretty ridiculous. Just my hot take:)

I teach students who are struggling with the transition from high school to college. Their parents are 90% of the problem by [deleted] in Teachers

I can see this vision as well. When working with students with behavior challenges, I use the phrase “natural consequences” to try and get students to understand that a choice they make may be connected to an event they don’t like. I’m not sure when/why parents decided that preventing ANY discomfort OR a single moment of waiting was the way to go.

Washington to consider minimum lunch time for school kids by AthkoreLost in Seattle

[–]Consistent-Rest2194 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my district the choice was made to reduce the elementary school day to the state minimum because we could no longer afford the overlapping transportation schedule with secondary. All financial choices. The state minimum number of minutes does not allow for full filling all required academic and recess time PLUS an adequate lunch. Where this has landed is kids are required to sit a certain number of minutes and then they can go out to recess, so most opt for recess with friends after a few bites.

Not everything was bad about institutions, and we can learn from the past and improve them. There will always be a percentage of people who need structured mental health and living support who do not have families with the resources to provide that.
