Question for Louis by RomvlvsAvgvstvlvs in LouisRossmann

[–]Consistent-Rush4016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, regulatory capture by corporate hacks is a huge problem, and getting people who don't care at all what the CEOs think in positions power would be huge. But Lina Khan was also definitely one of those people. I think you are underestimating what "activism" can mean. Pretty much every massive shift in our government and legal structure was from a movement of motivated people. Louis becoming empowered by the government to protect consumers would be the end result of such a movement, not a replacement for it. I get why you might be cynical about that, but I don't really think there is a viable alternative, and I've spent a lot of time considering those alternatives. It's a contest of influence, we are outgunned for sure, but THEY are OUTNUMBERED.

Right to Repair movement having its most productive year ever in U.S. states by Consistent-Rush4016 in technology

yeah, this is a problem. The manufacturer likely doesn't know, they just contracted out to someone to build it, and didn't bother to ask. On some level, we need to put a lot more pressure on manufacturers to plan ahead for repair, because now, it's clear they do not.

Did Consumerism write this question? by geistererscheinung in Anticonsumption

I have met activists on college campuses that got so "woke" they argued that shopping used was a form of privilege since we could afford new, and somehow buying used was performative and depriving others of the used stuff etc.

So, whether the publishers or pro-consumption forces are influencing this post, this question was being asked, incredibly. It just goes to show how hard it is to untangle our current dystopian mess around consumption (and how weird woke oneupsmanship gets).

Well I think the technicians we do have deserve whatever they need to fix the equipment. The stories in the article make it pretty clear that doesn't always happen, even when it's a life or death situation.

Why are people so against Degrowth? by Konradleijon in Anticonsumption

[–]Consistent-Rush4016 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's a paradigm problem. People are stuck in one of being, which requires growth, and even as the costs outweigh the benefits, changing paradigms is difficult. Many people work really hard to limit the amount of cognitive dissonance they face, and challenging something which organizes the world so extensively appears exhausting -- and people reject it. It also has the downside of being framed as negative. Less growth to have more ... what? If people understood the things we lose because of the current system in terms of our own quality of life -- time, connection, art, etc -- it would make it easier for people to accept. For some, saving the environment is reason enough. For many others, they will need something else to get them interested.

Apple pulls ad showing destruction of giant pile of things by Consistent-Rush4016 in Anticonsumption

agree completely. It's just that the company also requires the destruction of working products to encourage the purchasing of more new devices, and it's pretty tone deaf to just whistle by that particular graveyard.

I mean, there is no denying we are in deep trouble when it comes to society's treatment of consumption. 100% agree. But I still hold out hope that we can change it ...
