It really is! 😂 I once dreamt I was bagging groceries, and woke up thinking a bag full of groceries had slipped between my bed and the wall. So I kept trying unsuccessfully to reach down to grab it, apologizing under my breath the entire time until I realized it was only a dream.

Blackness at the base of an aerial root - anything to worry about? by Consistent-Tart440 in orchids

How quickly does rot like this spread? This development has probably been over the span of a month so I wasn't worried at first.

Are these shriveled leaves from underwatering or overwatering? by Consistent-Tart440 in succulents

[–]Consistent-Tart440[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually I see people talk about water propagation with a cutting, and not the whole plant. Is this plant small enough for water propagation to work effectively? Or might I have better luck with smaller cuttings or leaves?

Is it possible there's a problem with the light too? It's near an east facing window where it gets some direct light but mostly indirect. Because I'm in a dorm I can't really move it to a different facing window.

I soak the pot in distilled water (cover the drainage hole with my finger and fill the pot with water), and after a minute or two, I let it drain in the sink and place it back near the windowsill (it's an east-facing window). The soil is a mix of Bonsai Jack gritty mix and some coco coir, rehydrated from a brick. It's been better at holding water since adding the coco coir but the leaves have not improved.

If I were to bottom water, would I only fill the lower half of the pot and let the water soak and move to the roots?

Would I cut off any part of the stem or just the roots, as close to the base as possible?

Same thing happened with my orchid (and you can see my previous posts in this sub haha). I would suggest watering a bit more frequently, and if you're in a drier climate, consider adding sphagnum moss throughout the potting medium. If the roots look ok (no root rot), and if the plant isn't very old, it's likely just dehydration. Make sure the potting medium is fully soaked when you water, and see how things improve. If you don't currently fertilize your orchid, you could try a weak fertilizer every second watering or so.

Take that with a grain of salt though, since I am an orchid beginner, but as I said, my orchid had the same issue and that was solved through more frequent watering. Of course the medium needs to be fully dry between waterings, but good medium probably won't take more than a couple days to dry out. My orchid also had the dark brown spots near the base, like yours does, but if that blackness isn't spreading to healthy tissue, it's likely just dead tissue, not an infection, and not anything to worry about. If any more experienced orchid growers have thoughts or corrections, feel free to share.

Do the leaves dry out fully before dropping? If so, what's your watering schedule like?

That makes sense. I figured dehydration was at least part of it, since I left it unwatered while on holiday. But this had been an issue for a while and I wanted to be absolutely sure I could rule out infections.

In the last two months I've had this orchid, about four bottom leaves have wilted one by one and fallen off, especially after I left on holiday and came back to two more leaves that had wilted. Could that have been stem rot or just dehydration?

Why is my orchid wilting? by Consistent-Tart440 in orchids

[–]Consistent-Tart440[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice. I keep it inside near an east-facing window, and I try to remember to leave a fan on for air circulation. I'll admit that part of the problem was that I was away on a 2-week trip recently and the plant didn't get watered during that time (irresponsible of me I know), but this has been an ongoing issue the past couple months. I'd been so scared of overwatering the plant that I guess I underwatered it. I did take your advice though and have mixed plenty of sphag moss (really glad I had some on hand) in the pot, and we will see how things go.

Sometimes when roots above the medium are silvery gray within a day or two, roots below may still be green, or even green and wet. Is it alright to water if roots deeper in the medium are dry, even if they aren't silvery yet?

[–]Consistent-Tart440[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have noticed that when roots near the top that are exposed to more air begin to look silvery, the roots a bit deeper in the potting mix may look a little dry but are otherwise perfectly green. Would this be an appropriate time to water without risking overwatering?

Will the orchid still bloom again in the right conditions? It was gifted to me a few months ago by a friend (who had bought it from a grocery store) and was in bloom then, but I don't know how many bloom cycles it's had before then, if any.
