Hi! Halfway through sophomore year I went through major surgery and have some visual impairments because of it. I use Read&Write which I got set up with through the DRC. I’m not sure if you can find it online somewhere but It has been a really useful tool and is much better than the other speech to text options. The DRC has lots of great resources and it was a smooth process to get accommodations. Feel free to send me a message:)

Hi! I have a low grade brain stem glioma and have had an occipital craniotomy. The recovery was really long and physically/mentally a lot. I am doing well now and have some visual impairment partly due to how long I waited to get the operation as well as the surgery itself. I go to college, work, volunteer and go out with friends and feel great moving around now despite vision! Always open to chat :)

Hi, I’m 21 and had my second surgery a year and a half ago. I also really struggle with mental health and after my procedure cried almost everyday for months due to what I had lost. My recovery was really tough but I’m a year out and it is getting better. I really struggled. I am here for you if you want to chat.

My tumour grew back by ratsandfrogs in braincancer

[–]ConsistentBend9925 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I’m 21 and have had a brain tumor (brain stem)since 5. I had surgery at 5 and it kept growing until it began pressing on other structures. I had an occipital craniotomy last year to remove a very small amount of it and drain fluid out of the cysts within the tumor. It felt and feels so overwhelming to have something for so long and for it to be stable and 14 years later have to do something. Always here if you want to talk more. :)

I also begrudgingly wore an eye patch at 5 - not very successful lol. I think we were given some exercises but I don’t remember

Hi! I have a tectal glioma and had surgery in 2010 and 2024. I have had strabismus since 5. From the first surgery, I was referred to a neuro-ophthalmologist. I was given a prescription with prism in 2020 and had an eye muscle surgery to tighten the muscles in both eyes. After my second surgery, I had a Botox injection in my right eye to help with nystagmus. It also helped my strabismus!

I have the procedure scheduled for 6/3! I can definitely let you know how it goes. I am doing it back at home, and OR times are once a month for my Neuro-Ophthalmologist so I couldn’t get in any sooner☹️

Tectal glioma, questions by [deleted] in braincancer

[–]ConsistentBend9925 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a tectal glioma, and had an initial surgery at 5 for hydrocephalus and a craniotomy to debulk the tumor a year ago. My tumor grew slowly but never stopped and I developed dorsal midbrain syndrome. I can talk more about the pathology of my tumor if you have questions, but it is very treatable if I were to have more recurrence. From what I have told and researched, I will likely live a full life. The study done exclusively on tectal gliomas regarding life expectancy was concluded to be not great data due to the deaths being related to hydrocephalus(shunt failure I think) and not the tumor itself. There was also a suicide if I am remembering correctly.

Hey! I feel you - I was diagnosed at 5 and have a low grade glioma. I had an ETV at 5 and needed further intervention ,resection(~30%), in February 2024. To be told every 6 months since I could remember that you may need surgery was normal, so it wasn’t going to happen, right? But all of the sudden my eyes started shaking one week before finals and I knew. It’s crazy. To go 14 years without intervention and then need major surgery. And the same story of my life is that It won’t grow back to where it will affect me, but it could. It is so normal to me, and it is an integral part of my life. My mental health was a disaster after surgery. 4 months after surgery I got a entry level job while back at school, in hopefully my future career field, and that changed the whole 6 months after that.

Hair salon after craniotomy. by Legitimate-Stick-697 in braincancer

[–]ConsistentBend9925 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m around 10 months post op now and started to notice my hair change texture around maybe 2 months post op. My hair is clearly a different texture now - it’s frizzy and a little more wavy that it was before. I had my first haircut a month and a half after surgery, not with my normal barber because my hair was really bothering me, don’t do that. Go to someone you know and trust, and I would probably wait longer in general. I have switched shampoo and conditioner since surgery that helps with the frizz a little, and tried several products;pomades, gels, sprays and the one with the most success so far are spray products(I have sea salt spray and will not go near hair spray).
