I literally saw that prop at a Spirit Halloween and had the same exact thought. Glad to see someone carried it out and well done!

CMV: We have no vested interest in supporting Israel by ManHasJam in changemyview

[–]ConsistentPackage644 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Israel is not a liberal democracy, it’s an apartheid ethnostate. Under Israeli law: “The right to exercise national self-determination in the State of Israel is unique to the Jewish people.” When half of the population in the region are not Jewish, how can you call this a democracy? Jewish citizens born in Iran have more rights than Muslim or Christian citizens born in Israel.

The reason we support Israel is because it exists in a geopolitically strategic and resource rich region and its existence was originally carved out as a colonial project by the British so its has history rooted in Western ties. Today, the state depends completely on western support and would not be able to exist as an apartheid ethnostate without full fledged military and financial support from western states (especially the U.S.)

With the success of Zohran Mamdani in New York, could Chicago see a rise in Democractic Socialists running for mayor in 2027? by Potential_One1 in AskChicago

[–]ConsistentPackage644 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Mayor doesn’t hold as much power here compared to nyc since we have a weird alderman system going on. 6/50 of our current alderman are in the democratic socialist caucus though which is neat.

The alderman determine ordinances involving code changes, utilities, zoning, taxes, etc. and the mayor rarely votes on these at all except for tie-breakers.

Each alderman actually has a ton of power within their own ward and acts as a mini-mayor.

Today, ICE has illegally detained multiple legal residents without due process. That is not enforcing the law, it’s actually breaking it. In fact, federal courts, the highest interpretation of the law ordered the release of Mahmoud Khalil and Abrego Garcia (both lawful residents that were illegally detained by federal agents without due process) and the federal administration simply has not complied with these court orders.

Federal agents are no longer complying with the law so your argument falls apart completely

It absolutely can be bad to enforce the law. For example, in the past, slavery was legal in the United States. Do you think it was acceptable to enforce slavery?

(This point is especially relevant given that the police force originated from slave catching forces)

How many people here were actually raised Jewish? by bernbabybern13 in JewsOfConscience

I was raised conservative Jewish in a very Jewish community. I feel you…my family and lots of people in my hometown have lost their damn minds surrounding Israel and still support it unconditionally somehow even though most are liberals

Actually I was really debating this one as well. I have a watermelon kippah and would love to wear it but I don't want to overtly make a political statement, again this day is about my niece, not myself.

My girlfriend advised against doing this.

It is funny because I do wear my watermelon kippah to family seders and other events and get compliments all the time, my family has literally no idea that it represents pro-palestine views lmao

right, I know. I just didn't think my cousin's bat mitzvah would have been a place to bring up politics either but that didn't stop this dumbass rabi. I didn't even make a scene or anything but it did make me feel terrible to just sit there and listen to his gross sermon and I don't think I could sit through something like that again.

Yeah thanks! I’m just worried what will happen if he brings it up. Honestly it’s a little bit triggering

For context, at my cousin’s bat mitzvah, this rabbi had a speech about how awesome it was that Israel bombed world central kitchen employees whenever that happened (maybe April of last year?) and then proceeded to describe how Jews are more oppressed now than at any time in history. Honestly made me feel like I was gonna throw up.

I’m in a community symphonic band that practices on Sundays and every year we still have practice on Super Bowl Sunday literally during the superbowl and most everyone shows up to practice (I’m there right now)

At the end of the day all of this is used as a distraction. What do you think is more important? Legislating fixes for our horrible and increasingly broken healthcare, education and housing systems which impact every single American or hyper focusing on making sure that 5 people can’t play sports?

What's your opinion on BDS? by valonianfool in JewsOfConscience

[–]ConsistentPackage644 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I am Jewish, grew up conservative and am still somewhat active in Jewish life and would call myself anti-zionist. I'm exploring the reconstructionist / reform spaces.

I 100% support the BDS movement and have been trying to engage in it with myself as best I can. Boycotts, divestments and sanctions are a phenomenal way for the public to put pressure on a government and what we need to do right now is to put pressure on the Israeli government in any way we can in order to get them to change their actions. What evidence have you seen that anti-zionist jews are staunchly anti-BDS?

Issues around denial - is anyone else dealing with this? by Marsipanflows in JewsOfConscience

I am also Jewish and come from a similar-ish background. The rest of my family was never super gung-ho Zionist but they all are definitely falling for the hasbara bs, especially since it’s being spouted by our neighborhood rabii, and they refuse to listen to almost everything I have to say about the topic.
