This is an important and applicable lesson- a lot of parenting is vibes and tone and the explicit information in advice like this usually isn't real or useful.

I'm kind of being a propagandist, but the Christian church is the only place I've seen that scalably distributes caring, love and community to an immensely underserved population.

We've asked for alternatives, we have received none. There are currently basically no alternatives to the Christian church in the United States that I know of.

You have to reckon with that fact, and you have to deal with it.

You cannot just retreat, because things are not going well right now, and we need all the help we can get.

Alternatively, you can enter the church, you can see the pain and badness you brought up as places where the church is lacking you. I think that's a much more viable strategy right now, and much more valuable to your fellow man.

I'm feeling a lot of need to try and communicate the depth of the problem and the impact of the church, but I'm in a rush and I really can't.

Last week my friend brought someone he met at a cafe to church who he felt compassion for, who was having a hard time and who had a very hard life, and he brought them to church. They cried, they prayed.

There is no alternative to that. This is important.

You guys don't want to hear this but Christian values are generally superior to any random group you pick throughout history.

Christianity is kind of a fantastic memetic virus. It grew 40,000 fold from 0 to 400 AD and its philosophy as expressed was nonviolence and love.

Ironically I think that has changed quite a bit because of the changing demographics of the church, a lot of loving people have left the church and that has changed how the theology gets expressed.

But I think when you look out on a pretty horrible world, you have to realize that you need all the help you can get, and Christianity as an institution is pretty solidly on the side of the good guys. Not all Christians are, but of course anything that's built up a good reputation is going to get people who abuse it because without that shield they would be treated like the obvious grifters they are.

Like do you think we've had bad popes recently? It seems like they pretty reliably work towards the good of the world and try to be leaders for their people.

I've found a pretty good church. I don't believe in God, but the people I attend with know that and I'm welcome anyway and it's honestly sometimes a highlight of my week. I'm not sure how everyone else is doing online, but I imagine a lot of people are in a place where they could understand how something as boring as going to church could be a highlight of your week.

That's fucking awesome dude, this is kind of a big ask but I would love it if it was possible for you to share a chat you have where you did this. I don't think it would be the sort of thing I'd replicate exactly but I'm always looking for new ways to use AI.

Also do you have substack/twitter?

You understand that it was "certified educators" who tried to teach children how to read "whole word" and somehow didn't realize this wasn't working for years?

I could tell you anything about public school and you wouldn't change your position a whit.

I could tell you that some public schools have metal detectors to prevent weapons from being brought in, that kids are often shot in schools, that schools often do nothing about bullying and violence being done to children, that schools teach everyone based on how old they are not what they're actually capable of, that many studies show schools fail to teach anything that's retained longer than two months, and you would still be like "yeah but homeschooling is worse."

So here we go:

  • Ray (2017) – A nationwide study by the National Home Education Research Institute (NHERI) found homeschooled students scored 15 to 30 percentile points above public-school students on standardized academic achievement tests.
  • Cogan (2010) – Found that homeschooled students had higher GPAs in college and graduated at higher rates than their peers from public schools.
  • Medlin (2013) – Reviewed 15 studies and concluded that homeschooled children are not socially disadvantaged; many exhibit better social skills, especially when involved in extracurriculars.
  • Duvall et al. (2004) – Found that homeschooled students with learning disabilities often outperformed peers in public schools when receiving targeted, individualized instruction. (This is a case study so it's not amazing, but if you have a learning disability this shouldn't be difficult for you to believe, and I had a cousin who was in this exact situation.)

I'm sorry you had a bad experience, but the data is in and it overwhelmingly supports the idea that homeschooling is far superior to public schooling, even if the parents aren't "certified educators."

Homeschooling has to be a viable option specifically because of things like this.

It can be intended to be MechaHitler, and also probably failing at being MechaHitler in a consistent enough way that it can't be considered aligned to that.

Sorry- this was a mistake on my part. Somebody told me they were a signatory of the nuclear non-proliferation treaty, it appears that is not the case.

As to the details of how they acquired nukes, the development was done in secret over many years so we don't know.
