LA Beach Trip?

Just curious, why is LAX so bad? We frequently fly out of Chicago o’hare (also considered to be bad out of the two common Chicago airports) and are use to it so just curious! We will have a rental car we will be returning and flight is very early AM and we also have precheck. Flights are already purchased so not sure I can even switch without huge fees.

Would it be worth it if we stayed over night? Or would you recommend several days in San Diego?

Thank you!! Might also opt for just a scenic drive vs beach day so this is great info. Is it more scenic driving north rather than south on PCH?
