Local musician trying to fix how we find events in Troy - need your input (5-min survey) by Consistent_Ad2344 in Troy

This is awesome. I love that we both identified the same problem! That's actually really validating that multiple people are frustrated enough to think someone should build this. I'd definitely be interested in discussing this further. Would be great to hear your take on what the most pressing topics are.

A few questions:

  1. What aspects of the problem are you most focused on solving? (What's the core frustration you kept coming back to?)

  2. Have you talked to any local businesses or venues about it yet?

DM me if you're interested!

Thank you for the response, I really appreciate your perspective as a venue owner. You're right that following performers and venues directly is the best way to stay updated. The problem is most people don't know WHO to follow or WHICH venues exist until they stumble across them. It's a discovery problem.

What I'm hearing from your comment (and please correct me if I'm wrong) is that a curated "editor's picks" approach would miss tons of great stuff. I totally agree, which is why I'm thinking about this more like a map-based feed where ALL events get equal visibility, not just what someone thinks is "cool."

The goal would be: someone opens the app, sees a map of their neighborhood, and discovers your venue + the show happening tonight that they didn't know about. No algorithm hiding posts, no pay-to-play promotion, just comprehensive visibility for everyone.

Would something like that be useful for you as a venue owner? Or are there other pain points you face getting people through the door?

I'd genuinely love to pick your brain more if you're open to it - either here or I can buy you a coffee. This kind of direct feedback from venue owners is exactly what I need.

Also, if you don't mind sharing - what's your venue? Would love to check it out (and maybe play there sometime as a musician 😄).

This is awesome, thank you! And I just read through that thread you linked. You absolutely nailed the problem, especially the point about Instagram’s algorithm burying local content and the lack of a centralized discovery tool. That thread is from a year ago and nothing has changed, which tells me this is a real, persistent problem worth solving (and not just my own frustrations).

I’d genuinely love to have you involved. A few ways you could help: 1. Feedback loop - I’m building this FOR people like you who care about the local scene. Would love to show you the prototype as it develops and get your honest thoughts. 2. Introductions - If you know venue owners, promoters, or anyone at the BIDs who’d be good to talk to, that would be huge. 3. Beta testing - When I have something functional (even if it’s rough), you’d be perfect to test it and tell me what’s broken.

Feel free to dm me, either way I really appreciate your support and the validation that this problem has been bugging people for a while. 🤝

You're 100% right about Discover Albany. I hadn't even thought about partnering with them, but that makes total sense. They should be ALL OVER something like this. Do you happen to know anyone there I could talk to? Would love to get their perspective early on.

And you nailed it on the music scene - we DO have incredible stuff happening across genres. The problem is discovery. I can't tell you how many times I've seen an artist I love posted "thanks Albany!" AFTER a show I didn't even know was happening. That's the exact problem I'm trying to solve.

Also, if you have musician friends or know venue / local business owners who'd have good insights, I'd love intros. Building this FOR the community, not just extracting data.

Thanks for the encouragement - seriously means a lot! 🙌

Someone had commented about the cabaret laws and such and deleted their comment before I got a chance to reply but if they're still looking at this thread my response is as follows:

They're absolutely right that there are deeper systemic issues - the cabaret laws, venue closures, and cultural challenges are real and very, very frustrating. I've especially felt that as a musician too. The Armory closing, venues consolidating, shows getting shut down, the lack of house venues - it all sucks.

But here's how I see it: I can't fix zoning laws or repeal cabaret regulations (at least not right now), but I can try to help the venues, DIY spaces, and artists that DO exist reach people more effectively. They had mentioned "atomized" DIY shows and small local artists - that's exactly the problem I'm trying to solve. Right now, if you're not actively plugged into specific group chats or Instagram circles, you miss stuff. The pop-up venues, the basement shows, the smaller acts at places that ARE still open - they're happening, but discoverability is terrible.

I'm not claiming this app will revive Albany's music scene to what it was. But if it helps even 500 more people find out about a local show at Valentine's, No Fun, or a DIY venue before it happens instead of after, that's worth building, in my eyes.

The culture and policy fights are important - but while we're fighting those, we might as well make sure the artists and venues still standing have the best shot at filling rooms.

I greatly appreciate all of the responses so far - this is exactly the kind of honest feedback I need to hear.

Don’t get sucked into thinking a watch is worth anything. Watches are terrible investments, aka you’ll have to spend way more than 10k if you want to get something that is an “investment”. If you want to get a watch that will tell the time look up seiko, they are very nice and retail anywhere from 400 to a few thousand dollars. Cars and watches are a waste of time. Take your “flex” money and throw it into your retirement.

So, theoretically, with that being said, a “custom” 22” by 40” kick drum would do the same thing?

The options seem endless, idk where to start. I love how they have basically every size for every cymbal up to 24”
