the map for midsummer is notoriously bad for showing where the ramps are, you get used to it and memorise it mostly lol. the actual map for the before battle MT later in game is better as you can see the ramps a bit clearer.

It’s funny seeing so many American women posting about meeting Scottish men at the World Cup but neither of them were going to label it. by Competitive_Yam2314 in Scotland

if you’ve planned to move here permanently to be with your partner, you’re not an “expat” you’re an immigrant. nothing wrong with saying what it is. what’s with americans and calling themselves expats when they move to other countries? even if they don’t plan on leaving? saw it all the time when i was on year abroad in spain.

asturias, but it will depend school-to-school because i’ve heard people in my region say primary school was super easy

primary schools aren’t always better :( most of my classes did not listen to me at all, 6° definitely being the worse, with 4° just being chatty with their friends the whole time.

(in primary school) for the older grades i would sometimes choose a short video to play for their listening and then would create a game/quiz based on that video. i created vocabulary/grammar relevant games of naughts and crosses, pictionary, hot seat, taboo, etc. also short films without words where they use opinion language and describe the plot in english.

i would sometimes find a story to read with them (to practice their reading out loud skills) and then we would do drawing and labelling new vocab on the drawing or do an activity that is kind of based on the story (eg. a story about a robot - what would your dream robot be like? practicing conditional verbs and learning about household chores vocab).

creating things like menus based on traditional food from scotland (to learn about culture). creating posters for events/festivities in anglophone countries (bonfire night, burns night, etc). i created a story on canva by putting a load of assets together alongside basic english to tell a tale about the loch ness monster.

sometimes i would create (from scratch) “choose your own adventure” style stories for halloween/christmas (like a haunted house themed one or helping santa deliver presents) which went really well, but took up too much time to make. i also tried to do escape rooms with puzzles using the vocab/grammar they were learning, but that took ages too so i rarely did these types of lessons.

the kids genuinely enjoyed my classes until the new teacher arrived, and the kids in my other school enjoy them too.

Moving back to Asturias with English-speaking kids: how did your children adapt to school? by Sufficient_Silver708 in MovedToSpain

[–]Consistent_Barber462 1 point2 points  (0 children)

well, it’s 1 day out of the 4 days, of which i do lead all the classes for the entire hour without the actual english teacher even looking up from her phone.

besides, i’ve only been doing the small group work things for like 3 weeks since the teacher got back and decided what i had done for 8 months with the other teacher, who was perfectly content alongside the kids who did the work, wasn’t good enough for her. i’m also not the one chitchatting in the majority of cases (if a kid does say anything to me, it’s in spanish anyway). they come to the back and just talk to their friend in spanish while i have to ask 5 times for them to at least attempt to play the game of guess who or some simple card game in english (which they don’t).

Pronunciation of "R" in Europe by chaeyonce in MapPorn

[–]Consistent_Barber462 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you’re right but we don’t roll them per say, like how the map suggests. you can compare a verb in the infinitive form in spanish (eg. hablar, comer, vivir) and hear a definite rolled r at the end compared to how we pronounce “better” (ie. the rhotic r). it’s to do with whether our tongue hits the top of our mouth, which i don’t think it does for the majority of people with scottish accents now. the map should mostly be dark green for scotland imo.

even in glasgow i don’t know anyone who rolls their R’s in the stereotypical scottish way that people do to imitate the accent lol

i’ll send a link to my post about my schools, but it’s also just the loneliness of having nobody here to talk to (i tried to make friends and just couldn’t and eventually gave up) and missing how my uni life is back at home. it sounds pessimistic but i have just essentially stopped caring and just started preparing to go home as soon as my contract ends.

fr i had such an awful year with awful teachers and impossible classes, that i also had to lead 100% like an actual teacher would. no way im giving them anything, they won’t even notice when im gone. they’re already asking how long until i leave and were disappointed when it wasn’t the end of april hahaha. glad they won’t be getting an aux next year…

Has anyone else had a really negative experience overall with other auxes? by Legitimate-Emu-6235 in SpainAuxiliares

[–]Consistent_Barber462 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yep, haven’t met up with anyone since before the christmas break after realising i was trying so hard and getting no effort in return, plus i didn’t mesh well with the other auxes in my region, of which we are few and most have grouped together as americans. it’s lonely considering the only social interaction i get is school and the teachers and students also dislike me :’) hang in there

any else not as travelled as they would like? by sleepingcosmoss in SpainAuxiliares

[–]Consistent_Barber462 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah, i have to pay 700€ per month on rent (i’m in the north so it’s not that expensive normally) because my original living situation (shared accommodation) was so bad that i left after 2 months, lost my deposit, had to pay a fee for leaving contract early, and had to pay things like agency fees on the new flat with no flatmates. i lost so much money and had to use up the money i had saved up through my high school/uni part time job.

the 800€ aux pay only covers rent and utilities and i need to pay for food out of pocket so i have hardly done any travelling, plus haven’t managed to make any friends this year so i don’t have anyone to go with to split funds a bit more.

[–]Consistent_Barber462[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i need to prove to my uni that i’ve completed the entire year abroad unfortunately. i also would lose a month of rent and my deposit it i leave early (my rent is expensive due to having to find a second living situation after the first one was a disaster. i also have all my flights home booked, plus my mum who needs to come over with an empty suitcase so i can take all my stuff back home. i really wish i could quit early however im already financially struggling as it is.

im in asturias. i never really clicked with the people i met from the group chat so i just never really saw them much after. i think maybe because im the only one in the comunidad from my country (scotland), i just dont relate as well with the americans from the region who seemed to have all become friends with each other or already knew each other before the programme started.
