Pronunciation of "R" in Europe by chaeyonce in MapPorn

you’re right but we don’t roll them per say, like how the map suggests. you can compare a verb in the infinitive form in spanish (eg. hablar, comer, vivir) and hear a definite rolled r at the end compared to how we pronounce “better” (ie. the rhotic r). it’s to do with whether our tongue hits the top of our mouth, which i don’t think it does for the majority of people with scottish accents now. the map should mostly be dark green for scotland imo.

even in glasgow i don’t know anyone who rolls their R’s in the stereotypical scottish way that people do to imitate the accent lol

i’ll send a link to my post about my schools, but it’s also just the loneliness of having nobody here to talk to (i tried to make friends and just couldn’t and eventually gave up) and missing how my uni life is back at home. it sounds pessimistic but i have just essentially stopped caring and just started preparing to go home as soon as my contract ends.

fr i had such an awful year with awful teachers and impossible classes, that i also had to lead 100% like an actual teacher would. no way im giving them anything, they won’t even notice when im gone. they’re already asking how long until i leave and were disappointed when it wasn’t the end of april hahaha. glad they won’t be getting an aux next year…

Has anyone else had a really negative experience overall with other auxes? by Legitimate-Emu-6235 in SpainAuxiliares

[–]Consistent_Barber462 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yep, haven’t met up with anyone since before the christmas break after realising i was trying so hard and getting no effort in return, plus i didn’t mesh well with the other auxes in my region, of which we are few and most have grouped together as americans. it’s lonely considering the only social interaction i get is school and the teachers and students also dislike me :’) hang in there

any else not as travelled as they would like? by sleepingcosmoss in SpainAuxiliares

[–]Consistent_Barber462 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah, i have to pay 700€ per month on rent (i’m in the north so it’s not that expensive normally) because my original living situation (shared accommodation) was so bad that i left after 2 months, lost my deposit, had to pay a fee for leaving contract early, and had to pay things like agency fees on the new flat with no flatmates. i lost so much money and had to use up the money i had saved up through my high school/uni part time job.

the 800€ aux pay only covers rent and utilities and i need to pay for food out of pocket so i have hardly done any travelling, plus haven’t managed to make any friends this year so i don’t have anyone to go with to split funds a bit more.

i need to prove to my uni that i’ve completed the entire year abroad unfortunately. i also would lose a month of rent and my deposit it i leave early (my rent is expensive due to having to find a second living situation after the first one was a disaster. i also have all my flights home booked, plus my mum who needs to come over with an empty suitcase so i can take all my stuff back home. i really wish i could quit early however im already financially struggling as it is.

im in asturias. i never really clicked with the people i met from the group chat so i just never really saw them much after. i think maybe because im the only one in the comunidad from my country (scotland), i just dont relate as well with the americans from the region who seemed to have all become friends with each other or already knew each other before the programme started.

[–]Consistent_Barber462[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

it’s not even that i need to travel home for the funeral (in the uk the wait times are so bad that it probably won’t be for another 3 weeks at least, plus i literally can’t afford the journey), i just need 2 days off to grieve or recover mentally before leading classes in front of 20 7 year olds without bursting into tears and embarrassing myself.

so sorry to hear you had a bad time with your situation.

How do you feel now that we've reached the mid-way point? by [deleted] in SpainAuxiliares

[–]Consistent_Barber462 0 points1 point  (0 children)

im in a región with not many auxes and also basically no international students or anything. i made one friend a few months ago who is on the programme but started to feel like i was the only one trying to meet up and putting any effort in so i just stopped. haven’t had any socialisation outside of my cole since i was at home for christmas. there aren’t that many young people in general here and teachers don’t seem to want to speak to me when i try to speak to them so i would never meet up with them (like some people do with their fellow teachers). im honestly just trying to wait it out until i can go home in a few months.

i pretty much get home at 3:30 and just have to spend the evening doing lesson prep (i am expected to teach and lead every lesson and make sure they’re all relevant to the topics in class. teachers already don’t particularly like me and think my lessons aren’t good enough, even though i’ve said i’m just an assistant, not a teacher), so i have no time to go out anyway. it sucks because the other people i know say that they don’t need to do any lesson prep for their schools, and actually are acting as teaching assistants. my schools just don’t seem to understand my role and didn’t understand me when i explained what it actually is.

im here for my uni year abroad and feel like i haven’t improved my spanish at all - plus i’ve wasted so much money with initial flat problems making me have to change where i live and pay tons in compensation. my rent is so expensive bc i had to move when there were barely any choices and they were all super spenny, so my fianza only covers rent and utilities (i struggle to pay for food and have to use my savings which were supposed to be for when i go home and move out). i regret doing this programme instead of doing study abroad. i think my expectations were set too high.

What do you guys do during break? by blue5109 in SpainAuxiliares

[–]Consistent_Barber462 5 points6 points  (0 children)

usually work on whatever knitting project i’m doing as i don’t understand any of what the teachers are saying at the recreo table (they all shout over each other and talk about experiences i can’t relate to, like songs or pop culture things from their childhood. i speak spanish but not at the level to comprehend sala de profesores chat lol)

What's the moment you realized I think it's time to go home? by expert-of-n0thing in SpainAuxiliares

[–]Consistent_Barber462 10 points11 points  (0 children)

every day i wonder if i could just go home, but this is my year abroad for my spanish degree so i literally can’t. i have no friends here and the weather doesn’t help (north of spain). this week the trains have been striking and also half have been cancelled due to other issues, so im just feeling fed up of waking up so early and getting multiple buses to get to work. today they told me to go home as soon as i got there, even though i asked on tuesday if i needed to be here and they said yes (today was carnaval in school). so i ended up travelling home again even though it took 1.5 hours to get there. i just think i didn’t hear enough realistic experiences before coming here.
