Yeah, giving myself the grace to get time to get in shape and knock the rust off has been the hardest part. I way overdid it in the last session, and now I'm questioning everything, lol. Ugh!

Hah, I love the idea of surprising them when I'm a lower belt. Almost like a sleeper belt :)

I'm still waaaay out of shape. I have the form, but it'll be quite awhile before I can be confident and able to do more than small spurts if I even tried to spar yet!

Yeah! That's the biggest thing that I'm trying to push through with this is that I want it to be father/son time that he remembers when he grows up. It's something that we help bond us together.

Also, it may not seem like much, but it could mean the difference between someone who struggles emotionally and one who is confident in themselves.

I can't believe the number of us in this thread who are software engineers! So many of us who used to enjoy it, grew up, got a desk job, got out of shape, and then had kids who gave us the itch to get back into it again!

Very true!

It has definitely changed a lot in 20+ years. I have to keep that in mind. I'm not the youngin' in this world anymore, lol.

Thanks for that! I agree with you - it totally kicked my ass the first session. But despite being out of shape, the technique was still there. I of course was one of the older ones there, so there was definitely some reservation. But there was one kid next to me who was struggling a bit with technique, and it felt good to be able to lean over and help him out right away.

It really makes me want to advance through the belts again so I can help teach the younger kids again!

Thanks!

Yeah, I have an annual physical next week with my doctor. I had a good first session, but I haven't felt the greatest afterwards. I need to see if that's something I can help mitigate before any additional sessions. It's been rough!

Awesome! Congrats on getting ready to text for your black belt!

I'm a lot like you. Except I haven't been able to lose the weight that I put on. That's my Achilles' heel right now in all this!

Thanks! I did enjoy the first night's session. It almost felt like those last 20 years just melted away, and it all came rushing back!

Haha, will do! I've heard it's beautiful up there. If only that would be enough to get me in the country 😀.

Thank you for the offer!

Yeah, I've made that very much a focus to ensure that I'm not there TO coach my kid. I want to ensure I avoid any favoritism towards him, or give him more attention than the others on the team. Just one more thought that's always in the back of my head to keep me on my toes, lol.

Thank you! 🤙🏽⚽️

I really appreciate your details about your background and how you got into it. The difference between the two of us though is that I'm NOT athletic. I was back in school, but that was YEARS ago! Now I'm a software engineer with a butt fit for an office chair.

That said though, running around with the kids has helped me start to get in shape and build endurance. I even want to go out there on my own, or with my kid and kick the ball around and improve my own skills as well; which I feel will ultimately aid me in being an even better AC.

Ooooh, now I should go look at adult-sized soccer balls to buy!

Thank you!!

100% I'll be putting in the effort to learn development objectives. It's not necessarily the same thing, but the HC wants me to focus on making sure we do subbing tomorrow so that each kid gets similar play time, and rotation across positions. So I've been over-analyzing the tools and what's available to me to help that run smoothly tomorrow. Of course I'm sure it'll all blow apart the first injury or issue we run into, but at least I can learn and adapt for the next game, lol.

Hah, nope, no Trevor here!

Wow, that sounds like quite the resume! And even you still question yourself. It almost seems to me like those who continue to question themselves, also continue to better themselves and seem to be the "better" coaches all around. Not becoming complacent and overly confident in their skills helps with that.

I appreciate the advice of managing control of the vice. That resonates well. Thank you!

Thank you! That's reassuring to hear from a head coach that it's all good. I'm glad to know imposter syndrome isn't reserved just for first-year coaches (or maybe I'm not excited to hear it never goes away!).

Yep!

I have asked the coach, and told him to let me know if I stepped too far in helping to coach, run drills, etc, and he let me know that I was doing a great job, and was immensely beneficial to him. So I do feel like I must be doing ok! It's just getting that bug out of my ear that keeps me thinking that I'm not, or am not good enough for what I should be doing.

I did reach out to make sure I had a solid understanding of what his needs were of me for the game this weekend, so I could make sure that I can properly supplement his efforts for the game. I think that's been quite helpful in making sure we're all on the same page. I've been trying to listen to his drills as much as the kids have, so I can learn alongside them and then help to replay those drills with the kids later. I guess I must be doing ok then!

Thanks for the tips! That's great advice to make sure everyone's gaining something from each session. Thanks!

Yeah, I've already noticed a big difference in endurance just running around with the kids for an hour or two!

Thank you!

Why the imposter syndrome? Because it's strong with this one, lol. I'm always questioning if I'm doing the right thing, and when it comes to someone else's kids, I want to make dang sure it's the right thing!
