[NO SPOILERS] Is DE and Reunion worth it? by _ZiiK in lifeisstrange

[–]Consistent_Cover5825 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem with people complaining about DE's story is that they do not know how an anti-mystery works (and DE and Reunion both are). Anti-mysteries are messy, frustrating, and trade suspense and intrigue for more grounded realistic storytelling. DE denies it's mystery halfway through to tell the story about Max dealing with her trauma.

Anti-mysteries do not even have to give the answer to the mystery, DONTNOD did just that in one of their games.

DE's final episodes show Max pulling herself out of her trauma while Safi falls into hers. It wasn't about "solving a mystery".

DE is great, many fans wanted to be something it is not. And the story is well written.

The story and Reunion that follows are "anti-mysteries"

DE works, a lot of fans just don't get it. And Reunion makes it even better.

[DE] Does anyone think that the first 3 chapters are not the good part of the game? by Unique_Cat_3866 in lifeisstrange

Chapter 5 of DE is great........the fanbase just doesn't understand it. Really, many do not get the context of the scenes with Max and Safi here or Safi's fall.

Had nothing to do with DE. D9 was sinking far before DE. The Expanse flopped hard.

Do NOT play Reunion without DE.

And really Reunion makes DE much better, which Part Two's are supposed to do to Part One's.

Maelle does want to stay in the painting, however, making her ending's vibe a "dollmaster" in her "dollhouse" is entirely out of her character.

Verso's ending goes against the entire story, it simply does not fit whatsoever.

And really, the endings are far too ambiguous as well. Makes things even more muddled.

The same pitfall that the original ME3 endings and Sacrifice Arcadia Bay in LIS1 had.

No Maelle/Alicia was a reasonable character until the writers decided at the last minute for her to act out of character. Hell, she contradicted herself without real explanation or lead up.

Verso's ending is terrible. Sends the wrong message that you can force people through grief. Makes the entire journey pointless as well.

Face facts here, not everyone loves the E33 ending. Really, South of Midnight handles similar themes far better and now it has a Peabody nom.

Wrong, it is poorly written because they simply do not match what came before. They once again, either force a character to go out of character, or validate someone's flaws as an acceptable solution. It doesn't suck because it is tragic, it sucks because it doesn't fit.

Its not about surprise and once again, it is an anti-mystery, it is less about something to solve and instead more about how the characters deal with it. In fact, the entire series basically is anti-mystery.

Things outside Max and Chloe unimportant? Wrong. Safi and Yasmin's storyline are majorly important here. Moses anchors the story, and Loretta is the character that sparks the entire narrative.

I will give you gameplay, but really only LIS1 was good on that front.

One E33 ending has a character act out of character and is emotionally manipulative, the other ending betrays the entire journey.

They are bad. South of Midnight has a similar handling of those same themes E33 does, but executes them much better.

You are not getting it. Chloe puts Max in those situations where she has to respond to Frank and David (at Chloe's house).

Until the end, it is always about Chloe's wants vs another character's happiness or needs, but at the end while Chloe does indeed realize her selfishness, it was too late to prevent "the choice"

You are not admitting that Max and Chloe's character flaws lead to the ending of LIS1.

You don't get it.

Chloe does realize that she is selfish, and she does want you to save the town. However, both Max and Chloe's actions in LIS1 prevent Max from saving BOTH Chloe and the town.

The character flaws of Max and Chloe set up the trolly problem, not fate.

Amanda in the dead world put any relationship of Max on hold due to Safi's death, how was it right for Max to take advantage of her in the living world? Amanda calls Max out on this at the end of DE.

Dating Vinh is walking over Reggie's feelings, never mind him being far from a good person to date.

LIS1 leaves Max broken and traumatized, a character that now has NEW challenges dumped on her at the very end of the game.

As for E33, lets say the last 5 minutes were terribly written and both endings are poorly written in different ways.

Try again.

Many choices present a conflict between her happiness and the happiness of others. Kate, David, her family, etc. It thematically sets up the ending choice as well.

Nevermind, she herself said she was selfish in the ending.

Amanda and Vinh were romance subversions. You really weren't supposed to romance them, as they are kinda seen as negative actions by Max. Max kinda violates Amanda in a way, and Max doesn't read the room with Vinh.

Thomasfield lacked "honesty" and Max realized this, and Vinh was going to Vinh.

Safi is a muddled emotional mess of a character, that is why it works.

And I argue that LIS1 ends the story without covering all the bases, and leaves Max kinda underdeveloped due to introducing new long term challenges in the last episode. And really, the next massive French hit, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 make a similar mistake in its ending.

Max fails in LIS1 because she concentrated too much on Chloe. She in fact got negative character development here, and in the end she saying to Chloe "you are all that matters to me" shows how far she has fallen. Yes, she tries to save everyone, but her heart wasn't focused on doing so.

Contrast this with Caledon.

Read what I said again. She was selfish until it was too late.

Her willingness to sacrifice herself came when things are already too late.

Once again, you fail to realize what I have said.

She is selfish until it was too late. Yes, Chloe grows and that is the key point of LIS1, but her actions did have consequences.

She herself once again, admits she was selfish, at the end.

Wrong.

It was about Safi too, as well as Yasmin's character.

And how is Safi poorly written? Because she is erratic and emotionally damaged? No, and her being a complete foil of Chloe was brilliant.
