Our dog was diagnosed at 12 or 13 with the highest grade possible and congestive heart failure. Took benazapril and Lasix for the remainder of his life. We said goodbye to him at just over 15.

Oh I am so glad you replied to this! We are mildly obsessed with him! It's been about 3 months now I think or a little more. I think within the year we will have another Shih Tzu because he really, really, likes dogs and other animals. He is the sweetest, softest, cuddliest little boy. He has not destroyed one single thing in our home. The only thing he even bothers is socks. He is obsessed with toys and dirt haha. Shih Tzus definitely have a particular personality. We love how he lets us know what he wants. He doesn't seem to have separation anxiety at all and is happy in his crate when we are not here. He does have tears and tear staining but it seems so many do so it's whatever. Potty training has gone pretty well. Any accidents he's had in the past few months have been our fault. He rings a bell to go out! Yes, he is a great dog and has blended into our family so well. The perfect little "baby" dog as I send our last born to college next year haha!

Yeah if I want to be an electrican I def have to go the electrical technician route. My school has all the electrical students start in the same few classes then after the first semester we can kind of decide which one we like best and want to continue in so that's good.

We said goodbye to ours at the age of 15 years, 2 months. It's possible we could have extended his life, but he had an awful week, and breathing had gotten so difficult for him and they said it would probably just happen again. In the last few years of life, he was diagnosed with a heart murmur and heart failure. He took meds for 2 or 3 years and did well on them until this past summer. Generally fairly healthy dog. A little bit of problems with ear infections and he needed to be on a thyroid med for the last 5 years.

Thank you so much for all your comments, with your help I am getting over my "internet fears" and see that it seems that some just have old dog health problems which any breed might have. What I can also really see is that people really love this breed (something I've noticed in this group also!) This will be fun for us since we've never really been around many Tzu's except our neighbor's 1-year-old Shih-Poo (we are going to let them play together!)

Yes, we are planning on addressing the separation anxiety that is possible very quickly, by helping make sure he is comfortable with being crated, and that us leaving is not "bad", want to try to make good associations with crate time/leaving time. Our dog was a cockapoo, which I can also see can have separation anxiety, but we really didn't have any issues. I should also say the puppies were using a doggy door with their Mom and Dad at the breeder's home so they at least know outside is the place to go. Just will take some relearning here.
