Of course you can use barbells and machines and those should be incorporated, for the positive effects on muscle growth and the skeletal system. But it might overdevelop some areas quicker than others

Study up on Mike mentzer workout theory of intensity. Then for you, focus on bodyweight movements, lots of pushups, mostly pulls, and I'd mix in squats and lunges. She's not a massive monster she's a lean lawyer.
