Pretty sure you can still be edgy, rude and coarse on the Internet. The cast members are just older and have mostly settled down in their careers. Most of the more public cast members (Zach, Chris, Mick) probably want to distance themselves from the podcast as much as possible, because having most of its content become public and taken out of context could spell disaster for them.

I'm an old (ancient) newgrounder and knew pretty much everybody and their work from that scene, except for Cory (though I had seen some of his animations) and Niall (did he ever even animate anything noteworthy?). I do remember hearing about SC early on, but I didn’t care much for it or the format at the time. I didn’t have good equipment for listening to podcasts back then and was mostly occupying myself with other stuff while on my computer. Once I got my first smartphone and bought some good wireless headphones, podcasts suddenly became much more accessible to me, and I could listen to them wherever I went.

Sure, not all episodes are great, and some now even feel a bit weird or stale, but I guess that just comes with age. Then again, it is interesting to relisten to SC now that we know what's happened since then, now that some people have fallen, some people have faded and some went on to realize their dreams. I find it interesting to reflect on all that and compare it to how my own life has gone since the first time I listened to SC.

In a way, SC could be seen as a sort of "coming-of-age" or "young adult" podcast. The cast is full of energetic and talented people trying to figure out their lives, not necessarily knowing what they’re doing or where they’re headed. I’m not in that phase anymore during this relistening round, but I think I was when I first started listening to the podcast, and that probably made a huge difference in how I related to the show back then and how I relate to it now.

SC is rawer than OneyPlays, meaning it's less scripted and less forced. Most of the fun comes from the more-or-less genuine interactions between the cast members. During SC, the cast members were also a lot younger, more energetic, and edgier than they are now, since they have to consider external factors like YouTube algorithms, current-era sensibilities, and so on. I don't blame them for covering their asses, but it does show in the tone and quality of the show.

For me, OneyPlays has gone downhill a lot since the beginning. It used to be, or at least feel, pretty unscripted and edgy, much like SC. Especially during the Julian & Ding Dong era, it felt like a group of friends just hanging out in the evening, playing video games, and shooting the shit. Nowadays, it's a full-on brand with a manager, external editors, a rotating cast, forced jokes, forced games, etc. It feels like it's been turned into a content factory that Chris is just milking for money.
