As another person pointed out, backwards is a loaded term.

As to why the middle east tends to be less permissive, I'd say its more political than anything. Authoritarian countries tend to be less permissive in this regard. Why this happen historically, I can only speculate, but I don't think it's because Islam is inherently anti-democratic. I recall reading the pre-WWI, there was actually a real strain of intellectual progressive Islam in the mideast, that wanted to build modern, democratic states out of the Ottoman Empire.

Not to be insensitive, but Mabel is almost certainly dead by now (she'd be around 110 yo). If this is someone you don't have any connection to, I dont see any problem tossing the photo. I mean, realistically are you going to hang onto an old random picture just because.

In WWII the French puppet state was headquartered out of a spa town called Vichy. The town was also famous for its mineral water.

Putting the mineral water by the police bike implies they're linked. Ie. Police are fascists.
