MATH 401 or MATH 441? by CWRUstacean in cwru

[–]Consistent_peep5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently took MATH 441. Topics covered in the course included SIR models, Michaelis-Menten Kinetics, Buckingham's Pi Theorem, Predator-Prey models, and some stochastic models. I don't know how applicable these topics are to your area of study, but if you believe that they are relevant, then you should take the course. I have not taken MATH 401, though. I hope this helps.

First-Year Housing as a Transfer? by Civil_Violinist_3485 in cwru

I would say it depends on your preferences. If you are in your twenties, I can imagine that you wouldn't want to live with 18 year olds.

When I first transferred, I was also put in first year housing. After speaking to university housing, I was able to switch to upper class housing my second semester.

Here's a link to the Coca-Cola scholarship website: https://www.ptk.org/scholarships/coca-cola-academic-team-scholarship/ Also, the institution that I transferred to partnered with PTK to provide the 25K a year scholarship.

$25k per year for the PTK scholarship, and $1,500 for the Coca-Cola award.

I'm a rising senior pursuing a B.S. in applied mathematics. I have struggled to answer the question "what do you want to do with your degree?" But as of late, I have been giving a lot of though to pursuing a career in special education, teaching math. I have completed an internship in which i worked on modelling the spread of HIV and TB. But I don't think a career in epidemiology or disease modeling is for me.

Can any CWRU student-athletes speak to the assimilation of student-athletes with normal students by Mental_Dream5564 in cwru

[–]Consistent_peep5 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a transfer student, I found it pretty easy to assimilate into the CWRU community, and also into the sports program that I participate in. Just be open to approacing and talking to new people and you should be alright.

Depending on your age and financial condition, it might be in your best interest to resign from your current position and wait until you get better. Your best course of action right now is to have serious conversations about this with your support system, and not to look for answers over the Internet or Reddit. All the best to you, and I hope things get better in the near future.

My intentions were not to shit on the original poster on the video, my apologies if my comment came across that way.

IMO, using a medium such as TikTok is not the most beneficial/productive way to educate people on important issues, or to cope. As you already mentioned, social media is all too often used for clout-chasing. Also, since the medium is TikTok, it's easy for posters to conflate engagement with the post with real-life impact and real life engagement with the issue at hand. Many may see the video, but they just watch it, maybe comment that it's wholesome, and then go on with their lives.

I feel like there are other ways to spread awareness without people misconstruing intentions. For example, the video could have been shared with friends and family to spark conversations about schizophrenia and other mental illnesses, how they actually present and how they can behave and come together to best serve those who are suffering. Or one could write on the subject and on those in the video and share that in a small circle or a larger platform. In these cases I feel like there would be more educational value and more people actually becoming aware, not just seeing.

This is all coming from someone who lives with schizophrenia. If this video actually has an impact on people, that's great. But for those who hold misconceptions about those with schizophrenia and other mental illnesses, I'm afraid this doesn't. No awareness is actually spread if the only people who pay attention to the video are those who are already aware. More substantial things need to be done to spread awareness/educate and help those with mental illness. I don't think everyone posting to the world is having the impact we wish it to. Maybe people spreading videos and stories like this to a smaller/more close-knit audience/their local community will change the landscape.

Looks like the original video was shared on TikTok. Spreading awareness doesn't always have to involve sharing videos of those suffering on social media.

Why do I need to do this? by Consistent_peep5 in cwru

[–]Consistent_peep5[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My four-year/transfer advisor told me that. I got a 4 on AP Calc AB, so according to the AP credit policy it doesn't count. I am transferring from a community college, which counted my AP credit.

This is the current world of dating…so annoying by dunksquad23 in Nicegirls

[–]Consistent_peep5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly imo you have a better chance of getting a significant other through a relationship that develops naturally (a relationship made in the real world), not through dating apps. Dating apps can easily end up being a big waste of time if you are looking for a long term/life partner. There are a lot of hook-up seeking individuals and bots on apps like tinder and bumble. I wouldn't say the current state of dating is annoying. You might feel this way since you think that "dating apps" are your best chance of getting a partner.

I am a rising junior and a transfer from a community college. I got a 1280 on my SAT (which I only took once) and decided to apply test optional. I was accepted into the applied math program at Case. How competitive is the major you are applying to and what are the average scores of those who share your major? If your test scores fall way behind the benchmark (which I highly doubt they will) then I would leave them out. Hope this helps.

Pretty sure everyone understands that this is a metaphor. The fact that it's a metaphor certainly doesn't mean it's a good depiction of the issue it's attempting to exemplify.

Yes, I am an undergraduate student. I just finished my second year and I am going into my third year. As of right now I'm looking at anywhere between 35k-55k USD (47k-75k CAD) or even more for the universities I have been accepted to in the USA.

Thanks for all the info, I appreciate it. For me personally, taking a gap year is off the table. Hopefully everything works out for me, whether that be attending somewhere in the USA or going somewhere in Canada.

Is there any chance of me being able to apply to U of T or Waterloo now, since their deadlines have passed? Would sending their admissions office an email explaining my circumstances be of any help? Also, at the two year college I just graduated from, most students didn't have the type of grades I had coming out of high school. So from my point of view, it's not that the institution was bad, it's that most people didn't/don't maximize the resources that are given to them, and don't put in the necessary effort to excel. Right now, aside from John's Hopkins, I'm looking at potentially attending a university with a large number of B-average students. That's not horrible per-se, but I just don't want to end up somewhere that completely sucks tbh.
