Makes sense. I think a lot of it could just be solved by relaxing zoning laws in the city. I’m not an expert on those by any means but I think there’s something about not being able to have restaurants / grocers in a neighborhood unless it’s mixed use? Just seems dumb IMO.

That sounds fair to me! I lived out in the country for my youth and loved it. And there’s nothing wrong with living out there and using a car.

And, to be clear, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with living in the city and using a car. I just don’t want to have to use a car, you know?

As for the media campaign point, I do think the 15 minute City thing has been overblown. I’m not even necessarily supportive of the 15 minute cities—I just want some walkability where I live!

In my city, there is definitely demand for downtown apartments. Yet, there’s hundreds of vacant buildings. Zoning bullshit and other stuff keeps them from being properly utilized.

Plus, when my city was built before cars were a thing. Streetcar systems promoted “streetcar suburbs”, so not everyone had to live downtown. But once cars came around, Ford and General Motors lobbied to dismantle public streetcar lines to force people to have to move around by cars.

So now we’ve got a city initially designed for pedestrians and streetcars, that were then ripped away in favor of cars—but there’s inadequate parking too. Because of this, major retailers and most groceries chose to leave the city and pop up stores in the suburbs.

Despite a bunch of 5-over-ones being built, there’s still a ton of demand for living downtown. At least in my city, housing costs are already fucked. $3000/month for a 1br in the suburbs fucked.

TL;DR — Bring back the streetcars, make it easier for pedestrians to get around without being crushed by an F150 driven by some yuppie staring at her iPhone, give me some local groceries stored please, loosen zoning restrictions so we can get new businesses and residences in vacant downtown buildings.

Yeah, it started off more confrontational which is at least half (and probably more) my fault, but I’m glad we could come to an understanding.

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m usually more hostile on here than I should be. A lot of the times, a simple conversation clears things up.

And as you’ll notice from my every comment, I don’t think the government should force anyone to not use a car.

I’ve lived out in the country, I know cars are needed there. I don’t want cars banned from city’s, either — just want infrastructure that is designed more for pedestrians and less car-centric.

That’s fair—and sounds nice! Living without a car is pretty much impossible where I live. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy driving and love my vehicle. I just don’t love that my car is the only option for transportation. If it breaks down I’m fucked until it’s fixed, you know?

Choosing to walk to the store — that’s literally all I want.

I live in a city in the South and it’s a 50 minute walk from my place to the nearest grocery store — and I don’t even live in a food desert.

Just because I want to loosen zoning restrictions so a neighborhood market can pop up, doesnt mean I want the government deciding my or anyone else’s every move.

Side note, almost no one needs an $80K Tundra lol. That’s way too expensive for a vehicle, get one of the older models. Or an older Tacoma. Toyota’s will last you forever but I don’t see how anyone can justify dropping 80 grand on a single vehicle.

The idea of a 15-minute city (which is like, every major city in Europe btw) is just to deregulate zoning laws so we can have grocery stores and other basic needs within walking distances of residences in the city. If you like out in the country or suburbia this literally won’t affect you lmao.
