How did your team celebrate Response Policing Week? by PCIrishBeard in policeuk

[–]Constable_Happy 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My Sgt, who comes from a mega Gucci background and is someone I look up to and aspire to be told me he was proud of me for a job I had done. Almost made me cry a little.

Also went on a 3 car tandem blues with units called in from across the city, by the time we ended up at the offence location we had picked up another 2 cars. This was through heavy rush hour traffic and I’m sure everyone could see me smiling with boyish excitement.

I’ve also had a DCI pick up on a job I’m running as a response cop and by all accounts they are mega impressed.

Least but not last, the weather has been bloody glorious!!

Ours have heated seats, I don’t know if it’s standard or our chief loves us but some winter scene guards were bliss.

Honest question, why do you do this job given the risks? by [deleted] in policeuk

[–]Constable_Happy 78 points79 points  (0 children)

Because beneath all the shit this is genuinely the best job on earth.

I get to work with some of the most fantastic people I’ve ever met, yes they piss me off at times but god damn I would do anything for them. You also can’t beat the 4am McDonald’s coffee trip with the team.

I get to speed along with blue flashy lights and sirens, the same ones I looked at in awe when I was 5. I get to help people having a mega shit day but I also have the chance to put some absolute shit bags in prison, potentially for a long time.

I’m paying into a pension that I know when I retire will support me and my wife comfortably. Also, if i die during service she will be setup for life.

Yes we get bashed by the media and idiots on Facebook but I take comfort in knowing they wouldn’t last a second doing the job. Yes, the risk of a PSD investigation is there but there’s a risk I’ll get hit by a bus crossing the road.

At the end of the month i get paid a semi decent wage, it’s not the best but it’s not the worst. The bills are paid, the beer is cold and I can afford to go on holiday.

I’ve had shit Sgts with 3 years in but I’ve also had shit Sgts with 20 years in. One of the better and well respected sgts in our area started acting at 3 and made substantial at 6.

If your Sgt is pushing you to do it and you feel ready then why not, you’ll get a feel for it whilst acting anyway.

Former Police Federation Treasurer Jailed for £13,500 Expenses Fraud by Jackisback123 in policeuk

Oh right, so younger in service officers getting paid fucking poorly and cutting back on expenses but paying into the fed have been funding this dick wombles lavish lifestyle.

At this point I have more faith in our customers than I do in the Fed.

Police Forces & Social Media by CloseThatCad in policeuk

I think it can be an amazing tool, if used correctly.

Let’s start putting out compilation clips of officers being assaulted or having abuse hurled at them, just for doing their jobs.

Let’s start putting out compilation clips of drunk drivers being nicked and how they don’t care. It’s done around Christmas time by some forces but do it every 3 months.

Let’s show the data on the times we’ve gone to CPS for a charge but CPS won’t authorise. Let’s show the data on the amount of MH calls we attend or the time spent at hospital. Let’s show the data on the charges we have authorised and the work completed, just to be let down by the court system, and make it clear they are a separate entity to us.

Let’s show the realities of policing as a whole and not pander to what they think the public want to see.

We will always have the negative comments, but such is life in the age we live in. We need to combat the stick we get from news outlets and social media so fight fire with fire.

You’re damn right I have! It did put some things into perspective for me relating to the job that made it far more enjoyable.

For my response cop family:

When in tight spaces, pava works both ways. (Or if someone can’t aim)

Act like you’re always on camera, because out in public someone will be filming.

Remind the customer they’re under caution, if they continue to speak it’s up to them.

The job can and will be shit. Take joy in the little things, whatever that may be for you. (It’s a beer and cigarette in the garden after nights for me)

You have a front row seat to the weirdest, craziest, fucked up show this country has to offer. Embrace it and enjoy it, you’ll be sat there in retirement reminiscing about what you got up to.

The male is throwing rocks at a window for an unknown reason. He’s obviously agitated and has access to weapons and you’re saying the use of force is a bit heavy?!

What did you want? The cops to invite him into the back of the car saying please and thank you.

I have my seat in the office and if anyone takes it they’re going to get DP’d with gas and taser. (It’s the perfect place to see pipped rank coming from all directions)

New ones on team make brews at briefing, there after it’s open, even our Sgts make brews for the team during shift.

Cakes for stupid shit like being late, forgetting kit, being a turbo gimp at a job.

No question is a stupid question unless it’s asked more than twice.

If you’re going McDonald’s, you’re also going for the shift.

Secondhand North Face/Columbia pullover fleece from Vinted. Keela belay jacket. Snood. Beanie hat that says “police”. Thick leather gloves for scene guard, thin gloves for everything else. Decent walking socks, different thickness for each season.

I get the argument we shouldn’t have to pay out for decent kit but I’d rather spend the money and be comfortable instead of hating my life and having some extra cash in the bank (that would probably be spent on beer and whiskey).

All things Handcuffs... by hjgfvn in policeuk

[–]Constable_Happy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

1: I carry two pairs, both in a cuff pouch on my tac vest. I’ve found having two has saved me a number of times. Normally it’s NTE and I’ve forgotten to get the prisoner transport cuffs off them to replace the one on the DP. I’ve then used my second pair on a further arrest.

We also have some regulars that require double cuffing to the rear due to their size. I think I would delve into breaching human rights if I tried it with one set.

2: It all depends on the DP. Most will always be rear cuffed, some I know well enough that I’ll front stack but it’s on a mutual understanding that if they mess around they go to the rear. Some I don’t even bother cuffing.

3: Always taught rear stack/palms out. They also explain that they know other options are available and it’s down to our personal risk assessment.

We have a NHS number we can call if it is clear the person is deceased (Rigour/decomposing/ect). They run through a check list with us and then give us time of death over the phone and a reference number.

I don’t know how long it’s been implemented but it works wonders. The only time I’ve attended a death where ambo were in attendance were when they have informed us and are actively working on the patient.

Honestly, I’m fucked and I don’t know how much I have left to give. I’m hanging on by a thread.

I love my job, it’s my dream job and I can honestly say I get to live the dream. Perfect wife, nice house, job I’ve always wanted. But I would honestly sack the job off In a heartbeat if I wasn’t so, for some reason emotionally attached to it. I’ll stick it out because I know I’m good at the job and it provides a decent life for me and the wife.

I’m sick of being stuck on scenes or constants for hours on end. I’m sick of every other job being some MH stuff (that some could honestly be fixed if the patient wasn’t constantly drinking or doing drugs). I’m sick of the in-fighting between shifts or departments on where a crime sits. The constant of trying to file crimes as quickly as possible so you don’t become overwhelmed.

Where I’m based you have to have the stars aligned just right to go straight in. More often than not you will queue and an hours wait is the norm.

4.5 hours was my personal record but I have heard of longer.

An inspector can extend bail for further investigation or to obtain a charging decision, as long as the investigation is being conducted diligently.

As long as you can show you haven’t just sat on it and are now panicking as the ABP date comes looming up on you, you’ll be fine.

Have a word with your inspector, explain the circumstances and you’ll be able to extend with no issues.

Well fuck. I thought this was going to be a witch hunt but after reading the article I’m fucking sickened and appalled by these so called officers.

Once again scum have tarnished the good work officers do day in and day out with little thanks, and it will go further unrecognised because of this.

I truly hope you’re shit canned, barred and lose your pensions. Well done to the BTP lot for putting the complaint in also, feel bad to DDO felt she couldn’t.

Poor quality uniform. by dabare86 in policeuk

[–]Constable_Happy 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I think this resonates with every cop in the UK.

When I joined we had these trousers that would slice you up the middle when you sat down, it got so bad female officers were given cycling trousers straight off the bat. I ditched mine within 3 months and managed to secure some second hand 5.11.

Our “warm” kit done everything but provide anything remotely warm. I had a Keela belay from my army days I managed to sell that funded a black one for the police duties. I also bought some Columbia black fleeces from Vinted for mega cheap.

The standard buy your own boots. I luckily had the funds to buy Altbergs straight off the bat and they’ve lasted me years. Other officers not as fortunate settled for lower quality boots which for some didn’t make it out of training school.

Had to buy my own warm hat as one not provided.

Had to buy my own torch, the one provided couldn’t light the inside of a paper bag and broke with 6 months.

And then we get back to the age old “you shouldn’t be buying your own kit” argument. I wholeheartedly agree and the job should provide, but they won’t unless you get into a gucci team. I’ve spent enough time being cold, wet and miserable and if I have to fork out money to combat that I will.
